52 Books In 52 Weeks: Week One Underway Come Join Us! [Start With Old Man And The Sea]

0

With the start of a new year, people always try to commit to new habits and are overwhelmed by the time needed to complete their new goal. In this thread you can set any amount of books you want to read for the year, as long as you’re reading. The mind is an amazing tool that needs exercise.

Support your local book shops, libraries, Amazon, Kindle, Kobo, Play Store and other places where you can buy books. We always carry phones around and are on them daily so a bit of reading here and there is only a positive use of time.

To fulfil the 52 Books in 52 weeks goal it’s best to aim for one book a week or more to give yourself room for periods where reading isn’t possible.

I accomplished 90 books last year reading 2-4 books a week. Keeping track I used a spreadsheet, but stopped updating around the 4 month mark. I’ll drop a spreadsheet in the second post along with other pieces of info.

Each month to keep this thread active I’ll hold a giveaway for a book of one’s choosing in paperback or official Epub formats.

If you need a starting point, The Old Man And The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a short and wonderfully crafted book. It contains the message of this thread and goal with grace.

as y'all are aware, we have been getting ready to move to a new platform. it's currently in beta form, and we're still working the bugs out, but u are all invited to check it out at: www.allhiphop.com

in this platform, IC posters will truly be the Community of AllHipHop. the IC won't just be a different part of the main website, IC posters will be an integral part of the entire community. we'll be able to make threads off of articles, take articles from other sites and post em on ours, post gifs at will, have access to Twitter, FB, Snap, Youtube, and others, AND we have a dedicated team to customize for future projects.

with that said, there's been some technical issues here on the Vanilla platform that we're currently on. once the move is complete, posters will STILL be able to access this site, but it will be read-only (like the Forum of Fame currently is). as we make the transition though, there have been some issues on Vanilla. we apologize for the inconvenience, we've been tryna make this as smooth as possible.

African American World War I soldiers served at a time racism was rampant in the U.S.

BLACKSOLDIERS_130.JPG&w=480

The young African American soldier sits on a chair, his legs crossed, his right elbow resting on a table beside him. A vase of flowers sits on the table. An American flag leans in the background.

The soldier’s heavy World War I uniform is buttoned up tight. He wears a broad-brimmed hat and has a single, small chevron of rank on his left sleeve.

As he gazes at the camera, he looks about 18. His name and fate are unknown.

But his century-old image is now available online, along with dozens of other pictures of African American soldiers from the Great War on the website of the Library of Congress.

The library has digitized a newly donated batch of scarce images as part of its continuing exhibit on the centennial of the war, which stretched from 1914 to 1918. And some of the pictures will be added to its next rotation there in November.

There are about 50 photos, almost all of them of black soldiers during World War I. They include shots of men with rifles standing at attention, their lower legs wrapped in leggings called puttees.

There are elegant individual portraits and group shots. There are soldiers and sailors — the latter, in one picture, apparently engaged in some gambling enterprise.

BLACKSOLDIERS_132.JPG

There’s an unidentified regimental band — more than 40 strong — photographed while sitting in the grass with instruments and huge bass drum. The exact date and place are not known.

There’s a class picture of Company C, 372nd Infantry Regiment, with what are probably its white officers.

Several men are pictured with American flags, at a time when violent racism was rampant in the United States.

“These are obviously people who are proud of serving their country,” said Ryan Reft, an historian in the library’s manuscript division.

They are “demonstrating their citizenship, and their love for America, despite the fact that they are not receiving the rights that they had been promised according to the Constitution,” he said.

One picture shows men of Company A, 321st Labor Battalion, forming a “skirmish line” following a battle, with smashed buildings in the background.

BLACKSOLDIERS_131.JPG&w=480

But they are armed with stretchers and ropes, rather than weapons, and are about to go search not for the enemy but for the bodies of dead.

One soldier wears gloves and has a pipe clenched in his mouth.

The U.S. enters the ‘Great War’ Over There

Between 370,000 and 400,000 African Americans served during World War I, Reft said. Most served as “stevedores, camp laborers, [and in] logistical support.” About 40,000 to 50,000 saw combat and about 770 were killed, he said.

Reft said one of the striking things about the pictures is that the men are in uniform.

“The fact that they even have uniforms, in some ways, is significant,” he said.

Often, especially in the South, black soldiers were required to “go out almost dressed as labor gangs, and not in uniform, because the military was afraid of offending white … sensibilities,” he said.

“It’s literally dangerous to wear a uniform in some places,” he said. “And in some places [black soldiers] are attacked and forced to take them off.”

Overseas, where some of the pictures seem to have been taken, “they could wear that uniform, and be proud of being American in service and not worry about being targeted negatively,” he said.

The photographs were purchased this year and last year by Library of Congress benefactor and collector Tom Liljenquist, who had previously bought and donated hundreds of exquisite photographs of Civil War soldiers.

Iconic Civil War image of master and slave headed to war

Liljenquist gave the new photos to the library earlier this year.

Known for his collection of Civil War images, Liljenquist said in a telephone interview Monday that the importance of the World War I pictures was pointed out to him by local author and photo historian Ronald S. Coddington.

Liljenquist said he purchased some of the images last year in Richmond. Then, last spring, he bought an album of more than 30 pictures that had been assembled by the late collectors Orton and Patricia Begner of Chili, N.Y.

“I snapped them right up,” he said. “They’re beautiful young men. The photographs are really nicely done and well composed.

“Here are these guys going out risking their lives for our country, and yet when they came home, those that did, they weren’t fully embraced by that country,” he said. “That’s what’s so haunting.”

Helena Zinkham, chief of the library’s prints and photographs division, said the donation more than doubles the library’s collection of black-soldier images from World War I.

Thirty-four of the new pictures are on postcards, she said.

Postcards were the rage in those days, and the soldiers probably got multiple copies of each one after sitting for a portrait, she said Monday. Alas, none bore addresses.

“The beauty of this postcard format is that it’s an individual person,” she said. “You’re looking in more detail at a face. … We didn’t have many facial close-ups. And that’s what we have now. The more individual personalities coming through.”

In addition, she said, “we need to, want to, love to hear from people who might recognize” a long-forgotten relative.

One striking photo in the collection shows a young lieutenant named William Stuart Nelson, of the African American 92nd Infantry Division, which suffered over 1,600 killed and wounded in the closing days of the war.

Nelson would later become a dean at Howard University, and an ally of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Indian statesman Mohandas K. Gandhi.

He would also become an international advocate for the philosophy of nonviolence.

Raids in New Jersey town target ultra-Orthodox Jews accused of welfare fraud. 'What is going on here

It was a spectacle nobody in this sleepy New Jersey town would forget.

Early one Monday morning, police and FBI agents in bulletproof vests bounded up the steps of suburban townhouses and split levels, threatening to break down the doors, hauling out in handcuffs husbands and wives in the distinctive clothing of ultra-Orthodox Jews. One was a prominent rabbi and head of a synagogue.

It was the dramatic kickoff of a series of well-publicized raids that since late June have netted 26 suspects on charges of stealing $2 million in government benefits. Prosecutors say that the suspects understated their income to get free healthcare, food stamps, rental subsidies and other benefits.

All of those arrested — 13 men and 13 women — were ultra-Orthodox Jews. The charges have tapped into a well of festering hostility toward an insular and eccentric minority.

Once a backwater at the edge of New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, Lakewood is now home to one of the largest concentrations of ultra-Orthodox Jews outside of Israel. They are a fast-growing population with a high birthrate; the population of Lakewood has exploded from 45,000 in 1990 to more than 100,000 today. Many of the newcomers are from large families priced out of Brooklyn by gentrification

Deliveroo raises $385M in new funding, now valued at 'over $2 Billion'

0

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/deliveroo-raises-385m-funding-now-101937499.html

Deliveroo, the London headquartered restaurant food delivery startup, has raised $385 million in new funding, giving it a valuation of "over $2 billion," according to the company.

The Series E round is led by U.S. fund managers T. Rowe Price, and Fidelity -- who have previously backed the likes of Facebook, AirBnB and Tesla -- with existing investors DST Global, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, and Accel Partners also following on. Total funding for the European unicorn now sits at $860 million.

The new capital will be used by Deliveroo to invest in three aspects of its business:

The first is expansion of its "Editions" (previously called RooBox) programme, which sees it open delivery-only kitchens to enable partner restaurants to expand without any of the traditional upfront costs, whilst increasing food selection for customers and optimising delivery times.

Second, the company plans to continue to grow the size of its technology team who, amongst other things, work on Deliveroo’s "real-time logistics algorithm and artificial intelligence systems" to help improve the speed and number of deliveries that can be made in order to increase what are otherwise very thin margins for on-demand food delivery. Another aspect to its data science is working out where it should launch the next Editions kitchens and what type of food is in demand locally.

Thirdly, Deliveroo says it wants to rapidly expand into new towns, cities and countries. "This will allow more people to order great food quickly to their door from their favourite local restaurants," says the company.

Will Shu, founder and CEO of Deliveroo, said in a statement:

“I remember how excited I was carrying out our first delivery. I hoped that people would love being able to order great food from their favourite local restaurants straight to their front door. I am proud that just four years on, millions of people use Deliveroo in over 150 cities around the world. This is all thanks to the hard work of our riders, the great restaurants that we work with and our brilliant customers.

So I am extremely pleased that our new investors share this vision and have decided to make such a significant investment in our future.

With this funding we will invest further in our delivery-only kitchens Editions, in developing our technology and in taking Deliveroo to more towns and cities. This investment will take us to the next level and allow our riders to deliver ever more great food directly to people’s doors.”

Meanwhile, the company's accounts for year ending 2016 were recently filed, and although they are obviously already 9 months out of date, make for interesting reading. As Business Insider reports, Deliveroo grew a lot that year, with revenue up 611 per cent to £129 million. But losses were up too — a 300 per cent increase to £129 million. However, the figure to really watch is the food delivery company's gross margin percentage, which sat at just 0.7 per cent.

Parents: R. Kelly Holding Our Daughters in Sex-Obsessed, Abusive ‘Cult’

A bombshell BuzzFeed News report quotes several sets of parents claiming their daughters are being held against their will in a sex-obsessed, abusive “cult" by legendary R&B singer R. Kelly. Three former members of Kelly’s entourage also spoke to the outlet, confirming the parents’ claims of the singer’s cult-like and predatory behavior—one is quoted as saying “[Kelly] is a master at mind control.... He is a puppet master.” According to parents and the former crew members, Kelly: keeps a collection of young women at his homes in Atlanta and Chicago; replaces their cell phones with ones specifically used to communicate with him; requires they call him “daddy” and ask permission to leave their residence; films their sexual encounters with him; and punishes them verbally and physically when they break his “rules” such as appearing remotely flirtatious towards other men. The daughter of one set of parents have attempted to contact their child—now 21 years old—for two years but have been rebuffed by her claims that she is in a consenting relationship and is not being held against her will.

What Would You Do If Cracka Ass Cracka Called You a Nigger?

With Donald Trump getting the Republiklan presidential nomination coupled with the Neo Gestopo pigs being able to kill black people with impunity, CACs have not only become more comfort with their racist views, they've once again have the confidence to practice racism and white supremacy without fear of reprisals. This confidence has manifested itself in being able to call black niggers freely and openly without free of punishment.

What would you do if a CAC called you a nigger? Since I have impulse control disorder and since my mantra is to confront racism and white supremacy then brutally suppress it. Rex would proceed to beat the racist piece of shit like the Romans did Jesus during the Passion.

Racist White Man Calls 12 Year Old Racial Slurs And Knocks Kid's Teeth Out.......Not Arrested

Fla. Man Who Punched 12-Year-Old’s Teeth Out and Called Him Racial Slurs Claims Self-Defense, Is Not Arrested

sphsone4fvtpwq4hu4iw.png

You’d think a grown-ass man knocking a 12-year-old child’s teeth out would at least dredge up an assault charge, but you’d have thought wrong. Because one Florida mother was left outraged and confused after her son was seriously injured and apparently nothing was done.

The 12-year-old boy, Malikai Villatte, told Fox4Now that the man in question came upon him and his friends, screaming and cursing and then calling them the n-word when the altercation seriously escalated.

“He was screaming at us, cursing at us, calling us the ‘n-word’ and he came down to the middle of his yard, and I was like ‘Who are you talking to?’ and he said ‘Come within arm’s reach and I’ll show you who I’m talking to.’”

Pictures of Malikai that have been circulating social media show his two front teeth knocked out as well as a severe gash to his mouth that required stitches.

“When I realized my teeth were dangling in my mouth, it was kind of shocking, I didn’t know what was going on,” he said.

To add insult to injury, the man, identified by authorities as 27-year-old Vincent Cerfalo, insists that he acted in self-defense, and, once again, he isn’t currently facing any charges and is, in fact, looking to pursue charges against Malikai for assault.

“I told them to back off and if they come on my property I’m going to defend myself. They said, ‘You won’t hit us, you won’t hit us,’ and they started to surround me,” Cerfalo told the news station, adding that the incident started when he shouted at the kids to get out of the road because they were blocking traffic.

“He touched me and I lifted my hand out, and I ended up hitting him. It was not my intention to hit anybody that hard, it was not my intention to knock teeth out or do harm, or cause any kind of trouble,” Cerfalo added.

efmikm3rofrl9wahbkci.png

Because you know, striking out hard at a 12-year-old definitely falls into the “not causing any kind of harm or trouble” territory.

The children refute Cerfalo’s claim, saying that no one touched him at any point during the incident.

“He’s not going to jail, nothing is happening to him, and he’s basically getting away with it right now,” Malikai said.

Since the altercation has gained increased attention, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has released a statement saying that the case would be handed over to the State Attorney’s Office.

The statement read in part:

The investigation of the incident included statements of multiple witness, many of whom were present and had varying levels of involvement in the altercation. The deputies on scene determined one of the juveniles involved was responsible for the altercation. Due to conflicting witness statements, it was determined the best course of action was to send the complete report to the State Attorney’s Office for review. The reporting deputy further requested the State Attorney approve a summons request for one of the juveniles on a charge of assault.

I am certain the deputies on scene investigated this incident in good faith the night it occurred. My goal as your Sheriff is that the community shares the same certainty. As such, I have directed members of our Investigations Division to review the evidence and statements obtained in this case and to work with the State Attorney’s Office directly to examine all aspects of the incident. As such, they will evaluate any additional applicable charges against the individuals involved.

The possible US-North Korea War thread

0

This shit should have its own thread. For if it happens, it will be the most significant event in all our lives.

Two most important things that you need to know:

1. On July 28th NK successfully test launched an intercontinental ballistic missile that reportedly reached a maximum altitude of 3,700 km (2,300 miles) and went a distance of around 1,000 km (600 miles). Experts estimate that if the missile was flown on a standard trajectory it would have a range of around 9,000 to 10,400 km.

2. On Aug. 8th the Washington Post reported that US intelligence services concluded late last month that NK can now miniaturize nuclear warheads on its missiles. It has been known that NK has had nuclear weapons for about 10 years.

So if there is a war with North Korea, it most likely will be a nuclear war, and NK now seems to have the ability to reach most of the US (and Canada).

In other words, this shit is no joke.

The is a map of how far NK missiles will need to travel to hit places in the US and Canada:

http://www.essence.com/news/eddie-russell-jr-shot-18-times-peoria-police-officers
Another Black man has been shot down and killed by police officers.

The victim, Eddie Russell, Jr., 25, was TLC singer T-Boz's cousin. On Sunday evening, the 47-year-old singer shared the news on Instagram that Russell, Jr., was shot "17 to 20 times" in an officer related shooting last week in Peoria, Illinois, and she wants her fans to help spread his story.

Russell, Jr. was named as a suspect in an armed robbery. Officers say the victim allegedly robbed the First Mid-Illinois Bank and Trust before returning home where an hours-long police stand-off ensued.

According to Central Illinois Proud, six Peoria Police Department Special Response Team officers fired their weapons after Russell, Jr. emerged from his home.

According to police accounts, Russell Jr., who family members say suffered from mental illness, exited his home in an "aggressive" manner and the officers shot him stating that they believed he was holding the same handgun used in the robbery. He was pronounced dead at the scene on Wednesday, September 20.

The six officers involved were placed on critical incident leave immediately after the incident. The Illinois State Police department is investigating the fatal shooting death. Family members and local activists peacefully protested the shooting.

In a press conference, local police chief, Jerry Mitchell, said none of the officers involved wore a body camera. T-Boz and her family are disputing the officer's account of the events that led to Russell Jr.'s death.

Calif. Boy Beaten to Death With Hammer While Trying to Protect His Younger Sister From Alleged Molester

kelbbwbye9hlv2cgzpj0.png

An 8-year-old California boy was viciously beaten to death with a hammer while trying to protect his little sister from her alleged abuser, authorities say.

Investigators say that little Dante Daniels was killed when his mother’s ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old Deandre Chaney Jr., attacked the boy with the hammer, KFVS12 reports.

According to the report, Dante witnessed Chaney molesting his 7-year-old sister, the criminal complaint indicates.

“Trying to save his sister from this child molester, and that’s why he was beat the worst,” Dante’s grieving grandmother Monique Brown told the news station.

At some point during the brutal attack, Chaney turned the hammer and a knife on the young girl, as well as on the children’s mother, 28-year-old Elizabeth Salone, who was present at the time.

The complaint also charges that Chaney used lighter fluid in his horrific attack and left all three for dead.

Dante was declared brain dead after the Sept. 1 attack and died six days later, having only completed his first day of the third grade.

tqfblxnglx3vowrtmcfr.jpg

Both Salone and her daughter survived, but Brown says her daughter will probably never see out of her left eye again and that her granddaughter will require much care, according to the report.

Brown hailed her grandson as a hero, even in his death.

“Dante gave his heart to a 4-year-old in Southern California, so a 4-year-old lives because of [him],” Brown said.

Chaney is facing murder and attempted murder charges, along with a charge of lewd acts with a child under 14.

The family has created a GoFundMe to help with recovery and other expenses.

The General Business Thread

0
0
Alright yall this is a spinoff from the Tax Implications thread that was started by @JonnyRoccIT‌ . I made this thread to help out anybody who has general questions about getting started or going forward, legal matters in business, financing/banks/credit, how to find information, building websites, structure, taxation, business plans/proposals, investing, motivation - anything that has to do with running a business please ask the question here and me or @pralims will answer you promptly.

Anything that has to do with even supplying apps or anything for that matter that can help someone, anybody, somewhere do something easier or better will be greatly appreciated.

To kick things off I have put the topics in spoilers to make the O/P organized and easier to browse for mobile users.

Business Entity/Legal Structures

Sole Proprietorship

The simplest structure is the sole proprietorship, which usually involves just one individual who owns and operates the enterprise. If you intend to work alone, this structure may be the way to go. The tax aspects of a sole proprietorship are appealing because the expenses and your income from the business are included on your personal income tax return, Form 1040. Your profits and losses are recorded on a form called Schedule C, which is filed with your 1040. The "bottom-line amount" from Schedule C is then transferred to your personal tax return. This is especially attractive because business losses you suffer may offset the income you have earned from your other sources.

As a sole proprietor, you must also file a Schedule SE with Form 1040. You use Schedule SE to calculate how much self-employment tax you owe. In addition to paying annual self-employment taxes, you must make estimated tax payments if you expect to owe at least $1,000 in federal taxes for the year after deducting your withholding and credits, and your withholding will be less than the smaller of:

1) 90 percent of the tax to be shown on your current year tax return or

2) 100 percent of your previous year's tax liability.

The federal government permits you to pay estimated taxes in four equal amounts throughout the year on the 15th of April, June, September and January. With a sole proprietorship, your business earnings are taxed only once, unlike other business structures. Another big plus is that you will have complete control over your business--you make all the decisions. There are a few disadvantages to consider, however. Selecting the sole proprietorship business structure means you are personally responsible for your company's liabilities. As a result, you are placing your assets at risk, and they could be seized to satisfy a business debt or a legal claim filed against you.Raising money for a sole proprietorship can also be difficult. Banks and other financing sources may be reluctant to make business loans to sole proprietorships. In most cases, you will have to depend on your financing sources, such as savings,
home equity or family loans.

Partnership

If your business will be owned and operated by several individuals, you'll want to take a look at structuring your business as a partnership. Partnerships come in two varieties: general partnerships and limited partnerships. In a general partnership, the partners manage the company and assume responsibility for the partnership's debts and other obligations. A limited partnership has both general and limited partners. The general partners own and operate the business and assume liability for the partnership, while the limited partners serve as investors only; they have no control over the company and are not subject to the same liabilities as the general partners.

Unless you expect to have many passive investors, limited partnerships are generally not the best choice for a new business because of all the required filings and administrative complexities. If you have two or more partners who want to be actively involved, a general partnership would be much easier to form.

One of the major advantages of a partnership is the tax treatment it enjoys. A partnership does not pay tax on its income but "passes through" any profits or losses to the individual partners. At tax time, the partnership must file a tax return (Form 1065) that reports its income and loss to the IRS. In addition, each partner reports his or her share of income and loss on Schedule K-1 of Form 1065.

Personal liability is a major concern if you use a general partnership to structure your business. Like sole proprietors, general partners are personally liable for the partnership's obligations and debts. Each general partner can act on behalf of the partnership, take out loans and make decisions that will affect and be binding on all the partners (if the partnership agreement permits). Keep in mind that partnerships are also more expensive to establish than sole proprietorships because they require more legal and accounting services.

The other portion is in the next post

As for what state is best to incorporate in, it really depends on what type of business you're trying to build. Please PM me and I may be able to assist you.
