School selling $120 bulletproof backpack inserts in event of mass shooting
(CNN)A Miami private school is offering parents an unusual item for sale: bulletproof panels for their kids' backpacks.
The Florida Christian School website has a list of items available for purchase. These include winter wear, red school logo T-shirts and ballistic panels.
George Gulla, dean of students and head of school security at Florida Christian School, told CNN the bulletproof panels would add "another level of protection" to students of the pre-K through grade 12 school "in the event of an active shooter."
The school has never had a shooting incident.
"The teachers are trained to instruct the students to use their backpacks as a shield to protect themselves," Gulla told CNN in an email.
The cost of the panels is $120.
Gulla also said showing teachers how to use the panels is just a part of the overall safety training he gives them...

Reverseing aging
New research published in the journal BMC Cell Biology shows that old human cells can be rejuvenated using chemicals similar to resveratrol, which is a substance found in red wine and dark chocolate.
The new study was carried out by researchers at the Universities of Exeter and Brighton, both of which are located in the United Kingdom.
Lorna Harries, a professor of molecular genetics at the University of Exeter, led the researchers, and the first author of the paper is Dr. Eva Latorre, a research associate at the same institution.
The new study builds on previous research from the University of Exeter, which found that so-called splicing factors — which are a type of protein — tend to become inactive as we age.
In the new study, the researchers added "resveralogues," or chemicals similar to resveratrol, to aging human cells and found that they reactivated these splicing factors. This, in turn, not only made the old cells appear younger, but they also started dividing again, as young cells would.
"When I saw some of the cells in the culture dish rejuvenating I couldn't believe it," says Dr. Latorre. "These old cells were looking like young cells. It was like magic," she says.
"I repeated the experiments several times and in each case, the cells rejuvenated. I am very excited by the implications and potential for this research," Dr. Latorre adds.

The return of a cult classic.
McDonald's is bringing back the McRib, a sandwich that it launched in 1982 and removed from its menu in 1985.
McDonald's has a "coming soon" McRib page on its corporate web site and the company confirmed to CNNMoney that the McRib, which also comes with dill pickles and onions on a toasted hoagie-style bun, is making a comeback for its 35th anniversary.
The Twitter accounts for local McDonald's restaurants in Southern California and Hawaii have been promoting the return, too.
There are some changes though. The bun no longer has high fructose corn syrup --even though the sauce still does. You can also order the McRib and have it delivered via Mickey D's partnership with ridesharing giant Uber's UberEats service.
And there is, of course, a McRib Finder app for iOS and Android phones that also features McRib-themed stickers.

Free time...
We all have some kind of free time, even once in a while and when I say free time I mean alone time.
A real one feels like the way he or she spends the free time is best right? So how do you really spend your free time? Reading? Drinking? Partying? Smoking? Smoking and partying? Drinking and partying? Smoking and drinking? Smoking and reading? Reading and partying? Drinking and reading? How the fuck do you spend your alone time? Do you even make time to reflect at all? Meditate? Just look at people? Cars pass by? Yo how about thinking nothing at all? Am a Man and last night I spent literally hours thinking about nothing just resting... what about you man? What about you lady? Wtf do you do on your free or alone time? Even if you got kids... I got a child so. Speak on it...

52 Books In 52 Weeks: Week One Underway Come Join Us! [Start With Old Man And The Sea]
With the start of a new year, people always try to commit to new habits and are overwhelmed by the time needed to complete their new goal. In this thread you can set any amount of books you want to read for the year, as long as you’re reading. The mind is an amazing tool that needs exercise.
Support your local book shops, libraries, Amazon, Kindle, Kobo, Play Store and other places where you can buy books. We always carry phones around and are on them daily so a bit of reading here and there is only a positive use of time.
To fulfil the 52 Books in 52 weeks goal it’s best to aim for one book a week or more to give yourself room for periods where reading isn’t possible.
I accomplished 90 books last year reading 2-4 books a week. Keeping track I used a spreadsheet, but stopped updating around the 4 month mark. I’ll drop a spreadsheet in the second post along with other pieces of info.
Each month to keep this thread active I’ll hold a giveaway for a book of one’s choosing in paperback or official Epub formats.
If you need a starting point, The Old Man And The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a short and wonderfully crafted book. It contains the message of this thread and goal with grace.

Big Baller Brand Reveals Lonzo Ball’s New ‘ZO2 Collection’ At ComplexCon
Lonzo Ball and his family’s Big Baller Brand have made waves in the apparel industry by straying from tradition. Rather than partner with a more established brand like Nike or Adidas, the Balls chose to launch their own company and sell all of their shoes and other gear directly through their site.
Ball already has a signature shoe, and now he’ll be getting a whole collection of apparel, and it will be the first offering from Big Baller Brand available in traditional stores, according to Jovan Buha of ESPN:
Big Baller Brand is debuting the “ZO2 Collection” apparel line for Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball today at ComplexCon in Long Beach, Calif. According to the company, the “ZO2 Collection” is the first line of Big Baller Brand products to be offered wholesale to retailers. Up to this point, all Big Brand Brand products have been sold exclusively on BigBallerBrand.com.
Big Baller Brand being available in more traditional retailers is an interesting move for the brand, and it will be fascinating to see how people being able to try on their apparel in stores will affect the public’s willingness to pay the often exorbitant prices for the gear.
Buha also reports that brand will be making another move that has become more traditional for basketball players in recent years — trying to capture the Chinese market:

Reports: Mueller Impanels Grand Jury In Federal Russia Probe
Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, recently impaneled a grand jury as part of the probe, several news outlets reported on Thursday.
The Wall Street Journal reported, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, that the Washington, D.C. grand jury “began its work in recent weeks” and is separate from the one assisting with the probe into President Donald Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. The impanelment of that jury predated Mueller’s appointment as special counsel.
Reuters confirmed, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, that Mueller convened a grand jury.
The empanelment of a new, separate grand jury reflects the scope of Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the election and whether any members of Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia.
Reuters also reported that grand jury subpoenas were issued in connection with a meeting between Donald Trump Jr., the President’s eldest son, and a Russian lawyer.
Trump Jr. attended the meeting after he was promised damaging information on Hillary Clinton as part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s campaign. It was not clear whether those subpoenas were issued by the grand jury Mueller impaneled.
