With the start of a new year, people always try to commit to new habits and are overwhelmed by the time needed to complete their new goal. In this thread you can set any amount of books you want to read for the year, as long as you’re reading. The mind is an amazing tool that needs exercise.

Support your local book shops, libraries, Amazon, Kindle, Kobo, Play Store and other places where you can buy books. We always carry phones around and are on them daily so a bit of reading here and there is only a positive use of time.

To fulfil the 52 Books in 52 weeks goal it’s best to aim for one book a week or more to give yourself room for periods where reading isn’t possible.

I accomplished 90 books last year reading 2-4 books a week. Keeping track I used a spreadsheet, but stopped updating around the 4 month mark. I’ll drop a spreadsheet in the second post along with other pieces of info.

Each month to keep this thread active I’ll hold a giveaway for a book of one’s choosing in paperback or official Epub formats.

If you need a starting point, The Old Man And The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a short and wonderfully crafted book. It contains the message of this thread and goal with grace.

  • 11/30/17--13:58: My HomeTheater Project
  • I turned an extra room in my house into a home theater. The idea came to me in the end of May and was completed by the 2nd week of June but I officially want to say its done today after installing the 2nd row riser and the 7 ceiling speakers and 2 Subs.

So this project took me 2 weeks to complete and I did all this by myself not 1 person helped me wth anything I moved everything and threw everything out myself, painted it myself and set it up myself.
I took no time off from work either to do this either my days off or after work I'll work on the room.
But for those who know me know when I start on a project I'll find a way to finish.

So I painted the room dark colors preferably black and gray (Raider Colors) did a black ceiling and grey walls. I already had hardwood flooring so I got the padding from Costco which was super cheap and protects the flooring.

-The projector screen is the Elite 110 inch and the projector is a 4k Optima UHD65 that looks amazing.

-I got 2 sets of 4 reclining leather seating which I got for a steal from Amazon. I installed LED lights and USB chargers in all the arm rests. And color changing LED light strips under the chairs.
I also installed a wifi led light strip on the walls that works with Alexa so its voice activated.

-As for the speakers 8 truAudio ceiling speakers I got for a super good price from a guy who does our Audio at work.
And (2) 300Watt wireless Klipch subwoofers that shake the ground. One in the front and one in the back.

-I have a PS4,bluray,dishnetwork and fire stick hooked up.
My media rack consists of a power conditioner that all my things are connected to,to protect it from a power surge.
Everything runs off my DENON Receiver. I'm running everything wirelessly not running wires. Im using s device called IOGEAR. Works great.
I put acoustic foam all over the room in a design form so it doesn't look sloppy and put up black curtains to block any light during the day.

-The movie posters and frames I got for a steal the posters are Goodfellas,Casino,Scarface,Godfather,Boyz N Da Hood, above the rim, training day, paid in full,Friday,Taxi,Bronx tale.Juice, die hard, lion king, toy story, batman and Robbin and space jam. Also got some lion king, batman, spiderman, iron man decor.

As for the snacks and food I have all types of candy from sour to chocolate, cotton candy, cracker jacks. A real pop corn machine, hot dog roller machine, nachos and slushies and fridge filled with drinks.
It was a mission doing all this myself but it was worth it.

Watching games and movies, playing games are much better now.

What is the point in locking up a drug dealer? as soon as he/she gets taken off the streets they are replaced by another dealer. As long as these drug addicts want to buy drugs there will be somebody there to sell it to them every single time. The problem is not the drugs or the drug sellers the problem is the drug users themselves, it's 2017 and I am pretty sure most people know the dangers of smack and crack by now but do these kids? When I think back to school I don't remember them showing me the dangers of these drugs, we did like one lesson where we had to name drugs but that was about it, more needs to be done to warn kids on the dangers of drugs and alcohol (especially drink driving too) show them the many video's that are out there in order to scare them away from going in the direction of drugs and misery. We need to make all that shit legal and instead of all the money being spent on police time and resources to catch the drug dealers that shit can be spent on treatment and prevention, am I right?

The 2017 group of U.S. Rhodes scholars will include 10 African American students out of 32 selected, the most ever in a single Rhodes class.

This class will also include a transgender man and four students from colleges that had never had received the honor before.

The Rhodes Trust on Sunday announced the men and women chosen for post-graduate studies at Oxford University in England, including: the first black woman to lead the Corps of Cadets at West Point; a wrestler at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (better known as M.I.T.) who’s helping develop a prosthetic knee for use in the developing world; and a Portland, Oregon, man who has studied gaps in his hometown’s “sanctuary city” policy protecting immigrants in the country illegally from deportation.

“This year’s selections — independently elected by 16 committees around the country meeting simultaneously — reflects the rich diversity of America,” Elliot F. Gerson, American secretary of the Rhodes Trust, said in a news release announcing the winners Sunday, according to the The Washington Post. “They plan to study a wide range of fields across the social sciences, biological and medical sciences, physical sciences and mathematics, and the humanities.”

The scholarships, worth about $70,000 a year according to the Rhodes Trust, is considered by many to be the most prestigious available to American students and will cover all expenses for two or three years of study starting next October.

The 32 winners were selected from 866 applicants who were endorsed by 299 colleges and universities. Four of the institutions had winners for the first time: Hunter College at the City University of New York; Temple University in Philadelphia; the University of Alaska in Anchorage; and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Here is the list of black Rhodes scholars for 2018, according to the The Rhodes Trust and Associated Press:

Simone Askew’s international-history undergraduate thesis examined rape as a tool for genocide. She is the first black woman to serve as captain of the Corps of Cadets, which is the highest position in West Point’s chain of command.

Camille A. Borders was active in the Ferguson, Mo., protests and founded Washington University Students in Solidarity to address police brutality and racial profiling. Her senior thesis investigated how African-American women emerging from slavery understood and practiced their sexual lives and how slavery affected relationships.

Jasmine Brown will earn her Ph.D. in physiology, anatomy and genetics at Oxford. She fights against implicit bias in laboratories and has done cancer research at the Broad Institute, pulmonary research at John Hopkins, behavioral science at the University of Miami and neuroscience at Washington University, where she is researching protective genes against cognitive defects following West Nile-induced encephalitis.

Tania N. Fabo is a Harvard senior in human development and regenerative biology. Fabo was born in Germany to Cameroonian parents and is a U.S. immigrant. He created the first Black Health Matters conference at Harvard University. She has studied cancer throughout her college career and plans to study oncology at Oxford.

JaVaughn T. “J.T.” Flowers graduated from Yale with a degree in political science and started an organization to make sure low-income students receive an equal education. Flowers played basketball at Yale and started a program that changed the university’s financial aid system.

Hazim Hardeman is Temple University’s first Rhodes scholar. After attending inner-city-Philadelphia high schools, enrolling in a community college and finishing with high honors, Hardeman graduated from Temple magna cum laude. He has studied and written about pedagogy, race and politics, gun control, hip-hop and African-American intellectual history. He works as a Philadelphia substitute teacher.

Chelsea A. Jackson is also a Truman scholar and helped revive Atlanta’s chapter of the NAACP. She is pursuing a master at Emory; her thesis will examine prosecutorial discretion and race. Jackson is also the musical director of AHANA A Capella, meaning that she is smart and she can sing. However, since she is in Atlanta, the correct pronunciation is “saaang.”

Thamara V. Jean completed her senior thesis on the Black Lives Matter movement during her junior year at the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College of the City University of New York. It was subsequently published in the Journal of Politics and Society. She then followed up this research by studying black nationalism at Harvard during the 1960s. During my junior year of college, I accomplished a similarly impressive feat when I ran a Boston during a highly contested game of spades. (I did renege, though.)

Naomi T. Mburu won the 2016 National Society of Black Engineers Regional Conference Award for the best oral presentation and has given 11 research presentations and co-authored two peer-reviewed journal articles. Mburu, a senior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, plans to earn a D.Phil. in engineering science at Oxford.

Jordan D. Thomas, a senior at Princeton, plans to study evidence-based social intervention and policy evaluation at Oxford. He has already interned at the Office for Civil Rights’ Program Legal Group at the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Scholars in the Nation’s Service Initiative. Thomas was also a Fulbright Summer Institute fellow at the University of Bristol studying the culture, heritage and history of the U.K.

Ironically, the Rhodes scholarship was created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, a prominent British philanthropist and mining magnate who has is considered one of the architects of South African apartheid. Despite Rhodes’ personal history of White supremacy and brutal British colonialism, the scholarships which bear his name have earned a legacy as one of the academic world’s most important achievements. Also, prior to Zimbabwe obtaining its independence in April 1980, the African nation was a British colony named “Rhodesia” after Mr. Rhodes.

A schoolteacher in Tennessee has been placed on leave after videos posted to the internet showed someone in the classroom removing a Muslim student’s headscarf–or, hijab.

The videos in question were taken at the New Vision Academy Charter School in Nashville.

The first video was initially posted to Snapchat and captioned, “pretty hair.” The second video was also shared on Snapchat with the caption, “Lol all that hair cover up!!!”

In each video, the young student can be seen hiding her face as an adult’s hand rips away her religious head covering. The hands of students flock to the girls’ head–apparently touching her without consent repeatedly.

The videos were apparently shared with multiple people via Snapchat and eventually one of the messaging service’s users forwarded them to the local NBC affiliate, WSMV News 4. The station’s anchors then showed the videos to the girl’s family. Her mother and sister responded, saying, “This should never happen.”

New Vision Academy’s Principal Dr. Tim Malone was confronted with the videos and immediately began an investigation.

According to News 4, the teacher first claimed that no videos been made. Later, the teacher said the girl’s hijab was not removed out of disrespect.

Malone issued a statement, which reads, in part:

The actions depicted in the Snapchat video do not reflect the values, culture or climate of New Vision Academy. New Vision Academy will continue to emphasize that all staff members act in a way meant to empower and inspire our students. New Vision will use this video as an opportunity to press forward with increasing cultural sensitivity and awareness among all members of the New Vision community.

News 4 also showed the videos to Kasar Abdulla, a specialist who teaches Muslim diversity and sensitivity training to faculty at Nashville-area schools. She said:

As a female, and as a mother of three daughters, it should never be okay to rip off an article of clothing off of a female, period. I highly encourage those faculty members in that particular school to take a crash course on why the hijab is so important to some of my students, and why my students cover up.

The teacher in question was suspended without pay and the students in the classroom at the time have been forced to discuss the incident by New Vision’s administration.

Russell Simmons is stepping down from his companies in the wake of an accusation of harassment and sexual assault.
Simmons, the founder of hip-hop music label Def Jam Recordings and CEO of Rush Communications, released a statement on Thursday after screenwriter Jenny Lumet accused him of forcing her to have sex with him in 1991. She detailed the encounter in a guest column published by The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.
"I have been informed with great anguish of Jenny Lumet's recollection about our night together in 1991," Simmons said in a statement. "I know Jenny and her family and have seen her several times over the years since the evening she described. While her memory of that evening is very different from mine, it is now clear to me that her feelings of fear and intimidation are real. While I have never been violent, I have been thoughtless and insensitive in some of my relationships over many decades and I sincerely and humbly apologize."

The statement continued: "This is a time of great transition. The voices of the voiceless, those who have been hurt or shamed, deserve and need to be heard. As the corridors of power inevitably make way for a new generation, I don't want to be a distraction so I am removing myself from the businesses that I founded. The companies will now be run by a new and diverse generation of extraordinary executives who are moving the culture and consciousness forward. I will convert the studio for yogic science into a not-for-profit center of learning and healing. As for me, I will step aside and commit myself to continuing my personal growth, spiritual learning and above all to listening."

In Lumet's column she wrote that, "maybe recalling of this incident can be helpful" to other women who have spoken out against Simmons, but realizes there's a lot at stake in coming forward with her story.
"There is so much guilt, and so much shame," Lumet wrote. "There is an excruciating internal reckoning. As a woman of color, I cannot express how wrenching it is to write this about a successful man of color."
HBO announced in a statement Thursday afternoon that they were dropping Simmons from an upcoming stand-up series, "All Def Comedy," which he produced with the premium network. The series is set to premiere December 1.
"HBO will be airing All Def Comedy as planned," an HBO spokesperson said. "However, Russell Simmons will not appear in the new series and we will be removing his name from the show moving forward. The series is a platform for promising and upcoming comedians and we do not want to deprive them of an opportunity to showcase their talents to a national audience. We have no other projects with Russell Simmons."
This latest accusation made by Lumet comes after a Los Angeles Times report published on November 19 that detailed allegations of sexual misconduct made against director Brett Ratner and Simmons. A woman quoted in the story said Ratner and Simmons were "in it together."
Ratner and Simmons denied the allegations, with Simmons adding that, "abusing women in any way shape or form violates the very core of my being."
Simmons, 60, got his start in the music industry in the early 80s managing his younger brother, Joseph "Rev. Run" Simmons' hip-hop group, Run-D.M.C. The group is widely hailed as an early pioneer of hip hop music. Simmons co-founded Def Jam Recordings with Rick Rubin in 1984. Some of the biggest names in hip hop have at one point or another been signed to the label: Jay-Z, Public Enemy, LL Cool J and currently Iggy Azalea and Justin Bieber to name a few.
But it's not just music that helped make Simmons a household name. He went on to create several successful clothing lines, including Phat Farm, Argyleculture and Tantris.
Under his company Rush Communications Inc., Simmons has also been heavily involved in philanthropy. In 1995, he and his brothers, Rev. Run and Danny Simmons, co-founded the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, which helps expose inner city youth to the arts. Simmons was named a Goodwill Ambassador to the UN in 2009 and has also been a strong supporter of gay rights and animal rights. In recent years, Simmons has been very vocal about his spirituality, calling himself a "Christian yogi." In 2016, he opened a yoga studio in Los Angeles called Tantris.
Simmons joins a long list of Hollywood power players who have been accused of sexual misconduct in the last two months. Two exposés published in October that detailed movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's alleged harassment and assault against women opened the floodgates for others to come forward with their experiences. Weinstein has denied all allegations of non-consensual sex.

All I can do is shake my mfn head bruh.

    My Everclear Extraction Hash Recipe

    You'll Need:

Everclear [a good substitute for this is 99% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.. but it won't taste as good for reasons i'm still unclear on..]
    2 Mason Jars w/ Lids
1 Metal Mesh Coffee Filter [Cone Shaped]
    1 Spoon
    1 Pyrex Dish/Plate
3 Or More Grams Of Stem/Seed Free Shake

The THC molecule consists of over 300 smaller building blocks that fall into a number of groups.. The most interesting of these are cannabinoids & what are known as CBD's. The cannabinoids possess psychoactive properties while the CBD's possess the therapeutically beneficial aspects. & Somewhere in the mists of these divine gifts lurk shadowy agents that act as inhibitors to keep you from experiencing the total effects of that particular strain. The following process is one of a handful of ways to extract & isolate the psychoactive effects from the restraints of inhibition.. In layman's terms, if you take your time & do this right, it's gonna fuck your silly ass up..

Step 1: 1st, clean every stem, seed & superfluous particle of debris from the shake you plan on using.. Remember that [much like life] you get out of it what you put in.. Next... Freeze your everclear, weed shake & mason jars for 4 hours before you begin because cold is the key to separating the tricombs [thc resin glands] from the plant matter. When you're ready to begin, take your everclear, weed shake, & 1 mason jar out of the freezer & set a timer for 4 minutes & 45 seconds.. Pour the shake into your mason jar, add just enough everclear to cover top of the shake, & then screw the lid back on tightly. Press start on your count down timer & begin to swirl the mixture in a washing machine style, as opposed to shaking the jar randomly, until the time is up.

Step 2: Grab the 2nd mason jar from the freezer, open it, & set the coffee filter within the mouth of the jar. Then, with one hand holding the filter in place & the other gripping the jar containing the weed/everclear mixture, carefully pour the contents slowly so that all land within the mesh filter. Sitting the 1st jar to the side & grabbing your spoon, you want to quickly strain the excess liquid from the soggy shake. If you watch closely, you'll notice a greenish color in the last of the liquid that you've strained. That is gonna be the chlorophyll which has been dissolved by the water in the alcohol.. This reaction takes place after 5 minutes of plant matter/alcohol contact. We want as little chlorophyll in our hash as possible so stop straining immediately when you detect it. Close your 2nd mason jar's lid tightly & place it back into the freezer for 20 minutes.

Step 3: Take the 2nd jar from the freezer & swirl it's contents around to loosen the tricomb mud from the bottom of the jar & pour it into the pyrex dish. Let it dry in a lint/dust free area until all liquid is gone & the dish's remaining contents have air dried for 2 hours.. When this method has been mastered, your hash should come out perfectly golden.

Step 4: Heat enough water to fill the bottom of a shallow pan a few centimeters & then sit the dish containing the hash in the water. After about 30 seconds, the hash should easily scrape up with a razor blade & can be smoked in a joint or pressed into a solid piece to be later sliced off in chunks for smoking through bongs or pipes..

A Thanksgiving meal in Minneapolis Thursday reportedly ended with one man dead after he lit up a crack pipe and neglected to offer his host any of the drugs.

Anenia Marie Hare, 47, became enraged after her dinner guest, 69-year-old Edward Caliph, started smoking crack during their Thanksgiving meal without asking her permission or offering to pass the pipe her way.

Hare told police that before "they started to eat, she looked over and saw the victim lighting up a crack pipe," reports the Star Tribune.

Hare says she grabbed an antenna and a butcher knife with the intent of scaring and intimidating her guest. The tactic clearly worked, as Caliph immediately began screaming for a neighbor to call 911 and allegedly broke a window in the living room with a vacuum cleaner in a bid to escape.

According to what Hare told authorities, she grabbed Caliph by the shoulders and fell on top of him as he attempted to wrest the knife from her grasp.

I just grabbed him by the front and he went down," she told police. "To me it just felt like I put him in a deeper hold or something."

Hare said after the struggle, her guest fell face down on the ground and "started snoring."

The woman claims she then called 911 four times.

Caliph was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. His death was ruled as being caused by homicidal violence.

Hare was charged with second-degree murder and is being held on $500,000 bai

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police say a teenage girl was stabbed approximately 80 times and then set on fire met by a man she met on Facebook.

The body of 15-year-old Sabriya McLean was found in the 200 block of South 49th Street late Tuesday morning.

According to investigators, McLean met up with the suspect, 23-year-old Cole Swaringer-Herring, on Monday night.

Source say the suspect's parents were both out at the time and when they returned home he told them what he'd done. The next morning they alerted police.

Swaringer-Herring was arrested on the scene after the body was found under a pile of leaves by responding officers. Given the violence of the crime, investigators want to know if this suspect has killed before.

"It was a very violent act so we're looking at him in connection to some other possible cases that we've had," said Capt. Jack Ryan.
There was no word on a motive for the killing.

Swaringer-Herring is charged with murder, arson, abuse of a corpse and related offenses. He's being held pending his future preliminary hearing.

McLean, from New Castle, Delaware, had been reported missing. She had just turned 15 in October.

Reports: Mueller Impanels Grand Jury In Federal Russia Probe

Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, recently impaneled a grand jury as part of the probe, several news outlets reported on Thursday.

The Wall Street Journal reported, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, that the Washington, D.C. grand jury “began its work in recent weeks” and is separate from the one assisting with the probe into President Donald Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. The impanelment of that jury predated Mueller’s appointment as special counsel.

Reuters confirmed, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, that Mueller convened a grand jury.

The empanelment of a new, separate grand jury reflects the scope of Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the election and whether any members of Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia.

Reuters also reported that grand jury subpoenas were issued in connection with a meeting between Donald Trump Jr., the President’s eldest son, and a Russian lawyer.

Trump Jr. attended the meeting after he was promised damaging information on Hillary Clinton as part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s campaign. It was not clear whether those subpoenas were issued by the grand jury Mueller impaneled.

The parents of unnamed then 16 year old Louisiana student have sued their son’s former school district, the St. Charles Parish public school system, along with two teachers, Shelley Dufresne, Rachel Respess, whom they accuse of sleeping with their son.

The suit comes after a September 12, 2014 incident in which the youth was ‘subjected’ to a 9 hour threesome with the Destrehan High school English school teachers at one of the teacher’s apartment after being picked up from a Friday night football match.

News of the suit comes via a report via The Times-Picayune late last week, despite the suit being launched on August 11 in a Louisiana court room last year. How or why news of the lawsuit failed to make the media rounds until now is yet to be necessarily understood. Not necessarily disclosed is if the participants are amidst trial proceedings?

Right decision? Shelly Dufresne not guilty

Shelley Dufresne trial: ‘I love Mexican boys’

Photos: Kimberly Naquin Destrehan teacher arrested having sex with female student

Photos: Threesome Louisiana high school teachers charged

Two Lousiana high school teachers have threesome with 16 year old boy. Arrested after bragging.

Shelley Dufresne, teacher accused of threesome with student seeks to be let out of house arrest to attend jazzercise.

Louisiana threesome teachers free on bail. But dad is a judge too…

The suit brings forward new details that hadn’t previously disclosed, including allegations that the ‘sleep-over’ went on over the course of 9 hours (starting 9pm and ending 6am) and that the unnamed youth had before the ‘sleepover’ taken place slept with the youth no less than 40 times in 36 days.

The suit comes lieu of Louisiana state laws mandating that the age of consent merits the age of 17 before consensual sex can take place with any person older than two years age difference.

According to the suit, Dufresne was the instigator, with the illicit liaison first taking hold when the teacher allegedly started flirting with the student in class constantly, including once kissing him in the classroom.

According to the suit, things first took hold when, ‘one day when he was out sick,’ the English teacher texted the unnamed youth, believed to now be 18. That text led to a relationship which budded into a very intense, star-crossed romance, notes a report via the dailycaller.

According to the suit, on the night of the special sleepover, the local football team had won and it was Dufresne’s birthday, with a second teacher, Respess suggesting that the trio go to her apartment to ‘celebrate’.

Instead of telling school officials after discovering of her fellow school teacher, Dufresne’s extra-curricular activities, the suit claims, Respess also wanted in and proceeded that Friday evening to seduce the victim.

The suit also tells of Dufresene then ‘beginning to intimately kiss’ Respess, ‘in an attempt to arouse all parties involved,’ which of course is exactly what happened, according to the youth.

It wasn’t until the teen started ‘bragging’ about the incident that the teachers were questioned and then arrested.

During a string of court appearances in the nearly two years since the incident took place, Dufresne admitted to having sex with the student at the home she shared with her husband and her three children, leading to her accepting a plea deal for the charge of ‘obscenity‘, admitting to having “consensual sexual intercourse with a juvenile” at her home.

The deal required Dufresne having to ‘spend 90 days at an inpatient mental health facility, serve three years of active probation and pay a $1,000 fine.’ She also had to give up her teaching license, but she would not have to serve any jail time nor register as a sex offender.

Interestingly Respess was only charged with“failing to report the commission of a felony.’

That despite both teachers acknowledging they were with the boy, with the lesser charge sticking presumably because prosecutors don’t believe that they can prove that Respess participated in the sex with Dufresne and the boy, just that she knew it was happening. Of course one can’t help but wonder if authorities wouldn’t have tried harder to prove that Respess had taken liberties had the genders being reversed?

The suit claims that Dufresne took to social media to criticize the male student who was already a victim of a two-teacher threesome. These social media comments caused the student ’embarrassment and humiliation,’ according to the lawsuit.

The suit also claims that unspecified prior incidents show the School Board didn’t adequately screen, train and supervise Dufresne and Respess. It says the board failed to enact and enforce policies to protect students and didn’t train teachers to recognize and report inappropriate behavior between teachers and students.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for emotional distress, mental anguish, humiliation and reputational damage resulting from the multitude of sexual dalliances and the threesome.

School district officials have refused to comment on the lawsuit, while debate continues to foster as to whether the parents have gone too far, whether the school couldn’t have never controlled the after hours behavior of the teachers and whether had the genders been reversed, both teachers by now would have already been starring at 15-25 year jail sentences….
