First reported in Japan in 2011, the strain of gonorrhea, H041, has appeared recently in two cases in Hawaii and one case in California. The problem with H041 is that it’s untreatable, being resistant to Cephalosporin, the last available antibiotic to effectively treat gonorrhea.
Although the discovery of penicillin and other antibiotics in the 1940s effectively cured gonorrhea, recent strains of the disease have become more difficult to treat. There have been no reported deaths from HO41 yet, but that soon could change. The executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, William Smith, has already requested $54 million from Congress to develop a cure for HO41, while Dr. Alan Christianson took the time to tell CNBC that, “getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days.”
In the case that a little STD primer is necessary, if left untreated, gonorrhea can also cause a painful discharge and sterility in men, and ectopic pregnancy and/or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women. So instead of counting on a miracle cure in the next few years – since it might become “untreatable by 2015″ – simply “wrap it up” during sexy time.
