A 44-year-old former substitute teacher is accused of raping a 13-year-old boy over the course of a year starting when he was just aged 12. Police in Newburgh, New York say Lisa Franklin befriended the child's parents during the course of their sexual relations allowing her to become his personal, at-home tutor.
The boy's parents first reported the woman from Wallkill to police after finding inappropriate text messages sent to his cell phone in February. New Windsor Deputy Police Chief Rick Hovey described the text messages as: 'Not something you’d see between a 13-year-old child and a 44-year-old woman, that’s for sure,' according to YNN.
Police say Franklin is a married woman with two teenage children of her own. 'The parents trusted that she was acting as an adult and doing the proper thing,' said Chief Hovey. Franklin had worked at the Sacred Heart School up until the spring of 2012, the Archdiocese said in a statement after. 'The safety and well-being of our students is always our primary concern, and the Archdiocese of New York and Sacred Heart School leadership are cooperating fully with local authorities on this case,' the statement read.
Franklin is expected to face additional charges with the accused sexual encounters over the course of the last year occurring in multiple jurisdictions. 'Sexual intercourse, oral sex, this would occur in a car, maybe in a parking lot at various different areas when she was spending time with this person,' said Chief Hovey. Franklin was released from Orange County Jail after posting $10,000 bail. She was arraigned on Thursday and is expected back in court at a later date.
