You may be familiar with these “Smoothie” drinks from a company called NAKED (owned by Pepsi). Well, as it turns out the contents of these drinks aren’t all-natural after all. Naked just agreed to settle a $9 MILLION dollar class action lawsuit for false labeling.
The drink is said to include 11 chemical additives, including Calcium pantothenate, which is synthetically produced from Formaldehyde. Here’s a little info about Formaldehyde;
Ingestion of as little as 30 mL (1 oz.) of a solution containing 37% formaldehyde has been reported to cause death in an adult human. Water solution of formaldehyde is very corrosive and its ingestion can cause severe injury to the upper gastrointestinal tract.
Other synthetic compounds are said to include:
Fibersol-2 (a proprietary synthetic digestion-resistant fiber produced by Archer Daniels Midland and developed by a Japanese chemical company)
Fructooligosaccharides (a synthetic fiber and sweetener)
Inulin (an artificial and invisible fiber added to foods to … increase fiber content without the typical fiber mouth-feel)
PepsiCo did not respond when asked whether those synthetic fibers are in fact included in the juices..
The company’s statement said it will drop the use of the word “natural” until there is more regulatory guidance around the world. (New York Times http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/eats/naked-juices-lose-natural-label-article-1.1409973 )
