A 30-year-old West Hazleton man is accused of a brutal sexual assault in a Hazle Twp. home early Tuesday that left the victim with severe internal injuries.
State police at Hazleton said Emmanuel Paulino admitted to the attack and to using the illegal party drug known by the street name Molly. He is also accused of assaulting a trooper.
Troopers were dispatched to the Hazle Twp. apartment around 4:35 a.m. and found the victim in the fetal position, on the floor in her bedroom, bleeding "profusely." She was taken to Hazleton General Hospital and then flown to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital in Plains Twp.
A piece of tissue allegedly ripped out of the victim and recovered at the scene was examined by Dr. Gary Ross, forensic pathologist at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, and was determined to be stomach tissue. At Geisinger, James Benkinney, an emergency room doctor, told police the victim suffered internal trauma to her rectum caused by "penetrating trauma."
The Times-Tribune does not identify victims of sexual assault.
The victim said she and Mr. Paulino agreed to have sex that morning but Mr. Paulino "freaked out" and grabbed her by the neck and choked her, court papers state. She told police the attack stopped when one of her children entered the bedroom after they heard her screams.
Police could only say that she was in surgery at some point during the day. Trooper Chris Bonin said the hospital would not tell him what her condition was, even after he explained law enforcement needed to know if she would survive the assault.
After troopers found Mr. Paulino inside the apartment, he "head-butted" Trooper Michael Foux.
He was charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and aggravated indecent assault, along with one count each of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and sexual assault, all felonies. He also faces misdemeanors for a count of simple assault and two counts of indecent assault.
While being walked into his preliminary arraignment at Magisterial District Judge James Dixon's Hazle Twp. office Tuesday night, Mr. Paulino offered only one comment to reporters, saying he had Jesus on his side.
Judge Dixon set bail at $250,000.
