Washington DC $11.50 Minimum Wage

An $11.50 minimum wage will be coming as early as 2016 in the capital city of the United States, as city council officials — under unanimous approval — have agreed upon raising the minimum wage from $8.25 to $11.50 this week. The hike may not seem like much at first, but it is a substantial amount that was voted in on a final vote this Tuesday morning. NewsMax shares this Tuesday, Dec. 17, the breaking news on this bill’s passage, making Washington D.C. a city that will soon have one of the highest minimum wages in the entire country.

The $11.50 minimum wage is part of an increase in pay movement that has long been talked about in America’s capital, but only recently confirmed to be coming true for workers across the region By 2016, under the unanimous vote from city council members, the minimum wage will see a sharp uptick for millions of workers in the area. Although an initial measure for the bill had passed a couple of weeks ago, it was only today that the final vote was made definite.

Other states are similarly considering this important issue, but some have qualms about raising the hourly wage by over three full dollars.

“Some think the modified rate, which will be indexed to inflation as part of the new initiative, is far too high. Mayor Vincent Gray spoke out against the $8.25 to $11.50 measure because he was uncertain how it would impact the labor market. The political figure wanted the minimum wage to increase to $10 instead of $11.50, noted Reuteres. The District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce has wanted the minimum wage increased for three years, pushing to raise it to $10 and then tie it to inflation, Reuters said. But they spoke against such a high increase in a November blog post.”

“The DC Council could vote on the $11.50 per hour minimum wage within the next week or two and to do so would be wrong. I hope our elected officials can reverse their trend of misguided and arbitrary business decisions,” the blog said. “That is far too high of a number and clearly would not have the impact on District residents that proponents have suggested.”

What do you believe on this momentous change regarding the U.S. capital’s passing of this minimum wage hike in 2016? Should it spread to other parts of our country as well?
