A Detroit-area store is in trouble after the owner’s son set-up an Instagram account to ridicule Black customers inside of the store. The Black community was deeply disturbed to discover their photos were being taken without their consent and posted online with racist comments and captions. Some of the photos posted were of children, which has sparked an even bigger issue.
The photos were posted under the account username: bkoftheday. It showcased pictures of customers at the Miramar Market in Detroit that were posted by the son of the owner of a rival store named West Warren.
The photos featured captions such as “another stranded child while his parents shop for blunts and 40z” and “oh you fancy huh, they probably stole those dogs”.
Members of the community are conflicted because they claim to have always been treated with respect in the stores, and many of them said they were fond of the store owners and the employees.
One community member said, “Why even set up shop in the Black community in they think we’re nothing but monkeys? They can take our money but that’s how they really feel about us.” An elder in the community said, “Whoever made those statements should really go down on their knees.”
The owner of West Warren apologized to the people of the community about the actions of his son and says he is very disappointed in his behavior. “I apologize to the people. I apologize to little kids, to grown men. I will apologize to everybody about my son.”
The owner claims that he has fired his son for his actions but also defended him in the end by saying his son is not prejudice and was only trying to make a joke.
