Arkansas police officers fatally shot a 16-year-old boy in front of juvenile emergency shelter, but it’s not clear why.

Fox News reported that two officers responded to a call Tuesday night at East Arkansas Youth Services in Marion Arkansas, which is a Department of Human Services facility. Within “moments” of arriving, Aries Clark was shot. He died overnight in a Memphis hospital.

“I never expected not to see my son again. I had saw him that Thursday, and we were trying to figure out how we were going to do therapy to get help for him," Clark's mother Vicky Clark told WMC News.

The Marion, Arkansas, police department didn’t reveal any details about why officers were called to the shelter and whether or not Aries Clark was armed when he was shot, but his cousin, Chris Clark, told reporters that “he held a BB gun in the air, and they just took him down on sight,” Fox13 Memphis reported.

WMC News reported that doctors told Clark’s parents that he was shot in the back and the back of the head.

Two officers were put on paid leave, which is standard procedure, while the shooting is being investigated, according to KATV. The police department declined to release the names of the officers involved, but said they weren’t harmed. It’s also unclear if there was body cam footage.

Vicky Clark told WMC News her child was having behavioral issues at West Memphis High School, and the family was seeking therapy options for Clark, which is why he ended up at the center.

The teenager's father, who wasn’t explicitly identified, told WMC News, "he was just being unruly. He ran away from home twice, so we needed help with him. We just went from needing some help to the next thing we know he's dead."

East Arkansas Youth Services’ website says the facility “is a community based, private, non-profit organization that provides positive alternatives to institutionalization for children who are involved or at risk of becoming involved with the juvenile justice system.”

In a Facebook post, the center declined to comment on the specifics of the incident but said none of the staff were harmed. Mental health services were also provided to residents and employees due to the “traumatic nature” of the shooting.

“We also request your prayers for our operations and specifically for all individuals and entities involved in this incident. In turn we also offer our sincere prayers for all affected by this event,” the post read.

According to a police shooting tracker by the Washington Post, 568 people have been killed by police officers this year. Six people have been killed in Arkansas alone.

There have been other incidents in recent years of police officers fatally shooting black children with BB guns.

In San Diego in May, a 15-year-old was shot after he reportedly pointed a BB gun at officers. One of the more high profile incidents occurred in 2014 when a Cleveland police officer fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was holding a pellet gun. The officer was fired in May.

And in Columbus, Ohio, police fatally shot 13 year-old Tyrie King, who was later found to be holding a BB gun.

Video: Trump to Law Enforcement Gestapos ‘Please Don’t Be Too Nice’

During an address in Brentwood, NY Friday to a crowd which included many uniformed police officers, the President called for law enforcement to cease protecting the heads of suspects they’ve arrested as they put them in squad cars.

“When you see these thugs thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just see ’em thrown in. Rough,” Trump said. “I said ‘Please. Don’t. Be. Too. Nice.’ Like when you guys put somebody in the car, and you’re protecting their head, you know? The way you put their hand over, like, don’t hit their head, and they’ve just killed somebody. Don’t hit their head. I said ‘You can take the hand away,’ Okay?”

The remark was met with laughter and cheers by the officers who, throughout Trump’s address, appeared to be very much on board with what the President was saying.

Trump has, on numerous occasions, encouraged violence at his political rallies. At a February 2016 rally in Iowa, he told his supporters to “knock the crap” out of protestors.

Colin Kaepernick refuses “to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people”...

Colin Kaepernick explains protest of national anthem

SANTA CLARA, Ca. -- Forty Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick has willingly and knowingly immersed himself into controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of what he deems are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States.

His latest refusal to stand for the anthem -- he has done this in at least one other preseason game -- came before the 49ers preseason loss to Green Bay at Levi's Stadium.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game against Green Bay. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

The 49ers issued this statement: "The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem."

By taking a stand for civil rights, Kaepernick, 28, joins other athletes, like the NBA's Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony and several WNBA players in using their platform and status to raise awareness to issues affecting minorities in the U.S.

However, refusal to support the American flag as a means to take a stand has brought incredible backlash before and likely will in this instance. The NBA's Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf of the Denver Nuggets, formerly Chris Jackson before converting to Islam, refused to acknowledge the flag in protest, citing similar reasons as Kaepernick and saying that it conflicted with some of his Islamic beliefs.

Abdul-Rauf drew the ire of fans and was briefly suspended by the NBA before a compromise was worked out between the league and player, who eventually stood with his teammates and coaches at the playing of the national anthem.

Kaepernick said that he is aware of what he is doing and that he knows it will not sit well with a lot of people, including the 49ers. He said that he did not inform the club or anyone affiliated with the team of his intentions to protest the national anthem.

"This is not something that I am going to run by anybody," he said. "I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. ... If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right."

Kaepernick said that he has thought about going public with his feelings for a while but that "I felt that I needed to understand the situation better."

He said that he has discussed his feelings with his family and, after months of witnessing some of the civil unrest in the U.S., decided to be more active and involved in rights for black people. Kaepernick, who is biracial, was adopted and raised by white parents and siblings.

Kaepernick's Twitter feed is filled with civil rights Tweets and messages.

The former Super Bowl starting quarterback's decision to go public comes while he is fighting for his football life with the 49ers, who drafted him in the second round in 2011. He lost his starting job last season after being one of the most promising players in the NFL during his run under former coach Jim Harbaugh.

Over the past few months, his relationship with management has turned sour. He requested a trade last spring, which never came to fruition. He also has spent most of the offseason rehabilitating from operations to his left (non-throwing) shoulder, his hand and knee. That left him unable to fully compete with Blaine Gabbert for months and now, just weeks before the regular season starts, has him seemingly in a bind to regain his starting job.

He made his preseason debut against the Packers and played for the second quarter, completing two of six passes for 14 yards. He looked as rusty as you'd expect from someone who has not played since last November.

Following the game and without any knowledge of Kaepernick's non-football behavior, coach Chip Kelly said that there has never been any discussion about cutting Kaepernick.

A Police Officer Wore This ‘White Power’ T-Shirt to Court, and People are Outraged

When you come across apparel promoting law enforcement, you probably wouldn’t want to see a white power symbol and a grim reaper with a rifle. Washington D.C. officials apologized Friday over a “disgraceful” t-shirt apparently worn by an officer to court.

The Metropolitan Police Department said they are investigating it, and placed the officer, who was unnamed in their statement, on non-contact status. That means he’s still going to work, but can’t do anything with the community (eg. he won’t be making arrests any time soon).

The MPD’s tweet came after complaints by activists and an inquiry by Washington Post reporter Radley Balko.

Law4BlackLivesDC, an activist group of lawyers and other legal workers of color that describes itself as linked to the Black Lives Matter movement, published a picture of the shirt in a petition issued Wednesday.

They said that on June, 2, 5, and 13, MPD Officer Vincent Altieri was seen wearing an “offensive, racist, and threatening shirt.” He even allegedly wore it to court when he was there to testify in a criminal case.

“The shirt displays symbols of police harassment, hate, and death while prominently displaying the symbols and emblems of the Metropolitan Police Department,” they said.

The shirt displays a “sun cross” (replacing the letter “O” of “PowerShift”), a well-known and notorious white supremacist symbol adopted by the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist hate groups.

Immediately below is the image of the Grim Reaper, a personification of death in the form of a hooded skeleton, holding an assault rifle and a Metropolitan Police Department badge. Below, the shirt reads “Let me see that waistband jo,” referring to “jump outs” and the routine practice of demanding to see the waistbands of individuals, who are disproportionately young Black and Brown men, often for no legitimate reason.

Indeed, the Anti-Defamation League has said the Sun Cross is very popular among white supremacists

The petition suggests that because of the prominence of police symbols, it seems like the shirt was made for officers at the Seventh District, not just Altieri. They voiced concern about how cops there are treating locals. 95 percent of people at that district are black and have faced harassment and abuse from law enforcement, Law4BlackLives-DC said. They announced that they formally filed complaints with the MPD’s internal affairs office, and the Office of Police Complaints.

Clearly, these requests are going places, but where remains unclear: The group demanded that Altieri and any officer who wore the shirt be fired. Also, that cops who failed to report these shirts be “severely disciplined,” and that officials investigate racism and abuse of power by their cops.

Tennessee - Get a vasectomy for a reduced sentence

$

A Tennessee county has greenlit a modern-day eugenics program under the guise of offering prisoners a better future. Judge Sam Benningfield of White County issued an order in May that reduces jail sentences for inmates who agree to undergo birth control procedures. For male inmates, a credit of just 30 days is offered in exchange for vasectomies, which are permanent. Women who sign up for the program receive a Nexplanon implant, which is effective for up to four years. ABC 15 reports that 32 women and 38 men have enrolled in the program.

“I hope to encourage them to take personal responsibility and give them a chance, when they do get out, not to be burdened with children,” Judge Benningfield told local outlet NewsChannel5. “This gives them a chance to get on their feet and make something of themselves.”

The program is described as “voluntary,” though it stretches the definition of that term, basically putting inmates in the position of bartering their fertility for sentencing reductions. Considering that prison sentences are often the collateral damage of life issues from poverty to addiction to crime, it seems callous to ask already vulnerable people to forego a basic human right to shave time off their sentences.
The ACLU argues that pretending the program gives prisoners real options is deceptive and perhaps unconstitutional.

OJ Simpson’s parole hearing will air live on ESPN

O.J. Simpson’s parole hearing in Nevada this Thursday will be carried live onESPN as an expanded, 90-minute Outside the Lines Special, and pool cameras in the hearing room make it all but certain the proceedings will pop up at least in part on other news channels.

In fact, the Nevada Board of Parole says about 30 news organizations have registered to cover the hearing at both the hearing location in Carson City and at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Lovelock, Nevada, where Simpson is incarcerated on the 2008 armed robbery and kidnapping convictions.

Simpson will appear via videoconference from the prison, with four parole commissioners in Carson City.

The hearing begins at 10 am PT (1 pm ET), and ESPN has set aside a 90-minute slot under its Outside the Lines banner. The network’s Jeremy Schaap will anchor.

The public’s fascination with Simpson hasn’t ebbed since his era-defining arrest (and acquittal) for the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. ESPN Films, of course, scored big time with its O.J.: Made in Americadocumentary, the 2016 five-part series directed by Ezra Edelman that won a Best Feature Documentary Oscar for its theatrical run. FX’s hit 2016 drama The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story won nine Emmy Awards.

Simpson, 70, was sentenced in 2008 to nine-to-33 years in prison for his role in an armed Las Vegas confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers. If paroled – which legal pundits say is possible, even likely – he could be released October 1.

Simpson’s cohort in the crime, Clarence “C.J.” Stewart, served 27 months in prison before the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that he should have been tried separately from Simpson.

The Nevada parole board has indicated that a decision on Simpson’s release will be made the day of the hearing, and that Simpson will be permitted to speak.
