RIP to the Jherri Curl
Comer Cottrell, an entrepreneur and philanthropist who turned a small Los Angeles operation into a multimillion-dollar success story by catering to the hair care needs of black Americans, died today of natural causes at his home in Plano, Texas. He was 82.
With $600 and a broken typewriter, Cottrell opened Pro-Line in downtown Los Angeles in 1970. It was not the first black hair care company but it became one of the largest with the Curly Kit, an at-home hair relaxer that made the loose, gleaming Jheri curl — a style popularized by celebrities such as Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson — available at a fraction of the salon price.
"That's when his company went from $1 million to $10 million in sales," said Lori L. Tharps, co-author of "Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America," published in 2001. Through his company, Tharps said, Cottrell "democratized the Jheri curl."
The Jheri curl's ubiquity in black communities was lampooned in pop culture. The 1988 comedy "Coming to America" featured a fictional product called "Soul Glo," which gave users a shiny hairstyle and left a stain on furniture.
But with his brother, James, Cottrell turned Pro-Line into one of the most successful black-owned companies in the U.S., worth $80 million when they sold it to Alberto Culver three decades later.
Pioneer in business, politics, sports
Cottrell headed the Los Angeles Black Businessman's Association, which represented about 40 black-owned businesses, and during the late 1970s helped them expand through federal contracts and other opportunities.
After moving to Dallas in 1980, he became the first African-American admitted to the powerful Dallas Citizens Council and forged political connections that helped pave the way for the election of the city's first black mayor, Ron Kirk, in 1995.
In 1989, he became the first African-American to own a stake in a major league baseball team when he joined fellow Republican George W. Bush and other investors in purchasing the Texas Rangers. He held the team from 1989 to 1998.
He used his position to press for more minority involvement in professional sports management. He also plowed some of his wealth into expanding educational opportunities in black communities, including spending $3 million to preserve the Dallas campus of a bankrupt historically black college as the new home of Paul Quinn College, an institution affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
"If it weren't for him, there probably wouldn't be a college," college President Michael J. Sorrell said.
It started with rabbit fur and a dream
Born in Mobile, Ala., on Dec. 7, 1931, Cottrell acquired a passion for business when he accompanied his insurance salesman father on visits with prospective clients.
"I'd see him give them a piece of paper and promise to pay them something when they died, and then he'd walk away with their cash. It fascinated me," Cottrell recalled in Forbes magazine in 1981.
By the age of 9, Cottrell was eager to make his own money and went into business with his brother selling rabbit furs and meat.
He briefly attended the University of Detroit as a pre-med major but left to join the Air Force during the Korean War.
While managing an Air Force PX on Okinawa, he discovered that the military did not stock the grooming products requested by black servicemen. "Twenty percent of the people on the base were black," he recalled in Nation's Business in 1988. "I talked to the authorities, and they told me there was no need for such products."
After completing his military duty, he settled in Los Angeles and held a variety of sales jobs. He was a sales manager for Sears in 1969, when a friend persuaded him to start his own business in the underserved market for black hair aids.
He found a rundown warehouse, promising to upgrade the facility in return for a six-month reprieve on rent. He also saved on manufacturing costs by getting local chemical companies to develop Pro-Line's products in their labs if he bought the raw materials from them.
The curl everyone had and wanted
Cottrell advertised Pro-Line as "A Black Manufacturer That Understands the Hair Care Needs of Black Consumers." But being a black businessman brought challenges. When he issued a company check, for instance, "People I was dealing with would call the bank and sometimes I had to see the manager" to prove he was legitimate, he told the Los Angeles Times in 1985.
Pro-Line's first product was an oil-based spray used to enhance the popular Afro hairstyle. A detangler and a spray that held hair in place came next. Military bases accounted for much of the company's initial business, but sales eventually spread to barbershops, beauty parlors and drugstores. The Cottrells opened plants in the Los Angeles-area communities of Gardena and later in Carson.
In 1980, the company began marketing Curly Kit, the first do-it-yourself product for producing the loose waves favored by many top black celebrities. At about $8 a box, it was a huge savings over the $200 to $300 charged by salons. Pro-Line also sold a similar product for children called Kiddie Kit.
"You couldn't find a black person in America in their 30s or 40s who didn't have a Curly Kit or Kiddie Kit at some time in their childhood or adulthood," said Tharps, the hair historian. "Everybody had a story — about a Curly Kit gone wrong or an addiction to Curly Kit. Comer and his company made this very elite style something the masses could have."
As Curly Kit took off, Cottrell moved the company to Dallas to lower operating costs and be closer to Pro-Line's largest market. Soon he was licensing Pro-Line products in Nigeria, Kenya, Trinidad, even Taiwan.
Cottrell retired after Pro-Line became a division of Alberto-Culver in 2000. Married four times, he is survived by his wife, Felisha Starks Cottrell; his brother, James; a daughter, Renee Cottrell-Brown; sons Comer, Aaron, Bryce and Lance; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

WATCH: S. Carolina cop brutally throws high school girl to the ground for ‘not leaving class’
A Columbia, South Carolina sheriff’s deputy can be seen throwing a female student to the ground in video posted online by New York Daily News writer Shaun King.
The footage shows the officer approaching the student at Spring Valley High before grabbing her and wrapping an arm around her head and neck. The student is then seen falling backwards as he flips her over in her chair, before throwing her on the floor and pinning her to the ground. A teacher can be seen standing off to the side during the incident, but does nothing.
The officer can then be heard ordering the student to put her hands behind her back. King identified the officer as Ben Fields, saying that more than a dozen students have told him that they are “scared to death” of Fields.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott told WIS-TV that the student was being arrested for refusing to leave class. However, he did not comment on the officer throwing her down.
A local advocacy group, the Richland Two Black Parents Association, quickly released a statement calling the officer’s actions “egregious.”
“Parents are heartbroken as this is just another example of the intolerance that continues to be of issue in Richland School District Two particularly with families and children of color,” the statement read. “As we have stated in the past, we stand ready to work in collaboration to address these horrible acts of violence and inequities among our children”.

Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez to Divorce After 2 Years
https://www.yahoo.com/celebrity/halle-berry-and-olivier-martinez-to-divorce-after-170726642.html
Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez are divorcing after two years of marriage.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce,” the couple said in a joint statement to People. “We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life and we hope that you respect our and, most importantly, our children’s privacy as we go through this difficult period."
There doesn’t appear to be a specific incident that prompted the divorce, though the couple’s two year marriage has been peppered with legal troubles. Just last week, an employee at LAX airport sued Berry and Martinez for $5 million dollars, after Martinez allegedly hit him with a baby’s car seat.
There is also, of course, the Thanksgiving Day brawl of 2012, in which Martinez got into a nasty fight with Berry’s ex, Gabriel Aubry, after he came to drop their daughter Nahla off at Berry and Martinez’s home. Both Martinez and Aubry had to go to the hospital after the fight and Aubry was issued a restraining order after the fight.
This will be the third divorce for Berry; after her second, in 2007, Berry said she would “never, never get married again.”
There is no word on a custody arrangement for the couple’s 2-year-old son, Maceo-Robert, but the couple reportedly does have a prenup.

The New Definition of Coon
I know in discussions amongst black ppl , we like to be precise with racial slurs that refer to us. On the IC , I see a lot of instances where a poster tries to correct another poster on the definition of a slur. A lot of times it comes from posters who have been around nothing but "black" and "white" ppl their whole lives.
I see the uproar over the word "coon" now as if there is an official racial slur dictionary. A coon is a black person who denounces their alleigance to the black race, speaks up against another black person in public, an ignorant black person, a black person you don't like

B-more pig caught spitting on a "suspect" during an arrest. B-More pig department is "investigating"
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/blog/bs-md-ci-baltimore-police-spitting-20151013-story.html
Baltimore police investigating possible incident of sergeant spitting on suspect
Baltimore police are conducting an internal investigation into a video that has surfaced on social media that purportedly shows a city police sergeant spitting on a suspect, a department spokesman said.
Police spokesman T.J. Smith said only that the video came to the department's attention via social media, and that it was under investigation. The officer, a sergeant, is on administrative duty, Smith said.
Interim Commissioner Kevin Davis addressed the video at a news conference Tuesday.
"I think any reasonable person can look at the video last night and come away with serious concerns," he said.
Davis described the video as a man who appeared to be under arrest, handcuffed, in a prone position on the ground when an officer standing over him, leans over in a way that appears he spit on the arrested person. Davis said a female bystander can simultaneously be heard yelling that the officer spit on the man.
"We gathered this morning and reviewed that videotape. We have serous concerns about it. We launched an immediate investigation," Davis said.
Activist Kwame Rose was sent videos of the incident and posted them on his Twitter account, where he has more than 7,000 followers.
He couldn't say when or where the video was taken.
Rose, whose real name is Darius Kwame Rosebaugh, said the video showed the officer "doing everything Kevin Davis said police shouldn't do."
"The officer needs to be fired," he said.
Davis said he did not have information about the arrest or what prompted the incident.
Police did not identify the officer or the arrested person.
Davis said the department is asking for other witnesses to come forward and that the department is searching for additional videos of the incident.
Last week Davis addressed questions about another incident captured on video that showed a man punch a police trainee on Broadway Street.
"More and more police encounters are going to be captured on videotape," he said. "The police department welcomes that."
The department is scheduled to launch a body camera pilot program on Oct. 26 in the Central, Western and Eastern district that will last through Dec. 18, with the technology expected to be citywide by early next year.

It seems like a strange parallel universe, but it’s not. Another devoutly Christian family with 19 kids and counting has been accused of sexual abuse, RadarOnline reports.
Five women are suing the Institute in Basic Life Principles, the so-called treatment center to which Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar sent their eldest son, Josh, after they learned he had molested five underage girls, including his own sisters.
The women claim the organization allowed them to be subjected to “sexual abuse, sexual harassment and inappropriate/unauthorized touching” by employees and agents, according to RadarOnline.
One of the defendants includes Gil Bates, a friend of the Duggars and star of yet another reality show, Bringing Up Bates, which airs on UPtv.
Bates and the others are accused of covering up the allegations and failing to take appropriate action upon receiving reports of sexual misconduct.
The Duggar’s own show, 19 Kids and Counting, was cancelled by the network TLC after the molestation allegations against Josh came to light in May.
Since then the self-proclaimed “pro-family” Duggars, who have opposed rights for LGBT people, have face scandal after scandal. Josh Duggar had two paid accounts on cheating website Ashley Madison and paid an adult film actress for sex while his wife was pregnant with his fourth child.

Walgreens To Buy Rite Aid For $9.4 Billion

Walgreens Boots Alliance has agreed to acquire Rite Aid for more than $9.4 billion in cash, uniting two of the country’s biggest drugstore chains.
Under the terms of the deal announced on Tuesday, Rite Aid shareholders will receive $9 a share — a premium of 48 percent to its closing stock price on Monday. Including the assumption of net debt, the deal gives Rite Aid a total enterprise value of $17.2 billion.
“Today’s announcement is another step in Walgreens Boots Alliance’s global development and continues our profitable growth strategy” Stefano Pessina, the chief executive of Walgreens, said in a statement.
A combination of Walgreens and Rite Aid would create a new pharmacy giant with heightened influence with drug makers, pharmacy benefit managers and others in the health care industry.
Sweeping changes to health care under the Affordable Care Act and the rise in insured Americans has increased prescription demand, helping increase the total revenue of the nation’s retail, mail and specialty pharmacies 7 percent last year from 2013.
At the same time, companies have also been pressured to keep costs down.
Rite Aid will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Walgreens operating under its own brand name when the deal is completed.
Several waves of consolidation have reshaped the pharmacy industry. Since 2010, Walgreens has acquired Duane Reade, USA Drugs and Kerr Drug, helping it grow to more than 8,200 stores and revenue of $76 billion last year.
Last year, Walgreens struck a complicated deal to buy Alliance Boots, a British pharmacy chain, to gain a foothold in Europe. Buying Rite Aid would give it an additional 4,600 stores in 31 states, adding to its roughly 8,200 locations across the country, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The biggest drugstore chain, CVS Health, has also grown, acquiring Longs Drug, Medicine Chest and Navarro Discount Pharmacy, and now runs more than 7,800 stores.
With years of steep losses, Rite Aid, which itself acquired the Brooks and Eckerd pharmacy chains in 2007, has fallen to a distant third.
“The pharmacy consolidation endgame has begun,” said Adam J. Fein, president of Pembroke Consulting, a firm based in Philadelphia that specializes in the pharmaceutical industry. ”Rite Aid was one of the last remaining pharmacy assets available for purchase,” he said.
“Even with its debt, Rite Aid could have survived into the future. But this combination will give the new business a lot more scale,” he said. “The combined entity will have a lot more power against pharmacy benefit managers and other payers. They will be able to negotiate higher reimbursements for prescriptions.”
Shares of Rite Aid jumped after The Wall Street Journal reported the talks, closing up nearly 43 percent, at $8.67.
Walgreens expects to finance the transaction through a combination of existing cash, assumption of existing Rite Aid debt and issuance of new debt.
Citigroup advised Rite Aid. Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom was legal counsel on transaction legal matters and Jones Day was its legal counsel on antitrust regulatory matters.
UBS advised Walgreens and will be the sole arranger on the bridge financing.
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett acted legal counsel to Walgreens on transaction legal matters and Weil, Gotshal & Manges acted as its legal counsel on antitrust regulatory matters.

Watch this shit get swept under the rug for the bigger villain in Cosby.
State and federal authorities were searching the Indiana home of Subway spokesman Jared Fogle Tuesday, months after the former director of his charitable foundation was arrested in a child pornography case, Fox59 reported.
Fogle, 37, who became the sandwich chain’s spokesman in 2000 after losing weight as a freshman at Indiana University by eating an all-Subway diet, lives in the Indianapolis suburb of Zionsville. Authorities did not say if Tuesday’s search warrants were connected to the arrest of his former associate.

The FBI and Indiana State Police were on the scene Tuesday morning.
Fogle, who once weighed 425 pounds but now maintains a weight of 190, has taped more than 300 commercials for the food chain. He makes appearances around the country on its behalf as well as giving speeches on the benefits of eating healthy. Early commercials featured Fogle slipping into the 62-inch waist pants he wore when he was obese, and before he began eating exclusively at the Bloomington, Ind., Subway near the school's campus. His former roommate, Ryan Coleman, brought attention to Fogle's diet success in an article for the school newspaper that got the attention of the Milford, Conn.-based chain.

African Divination/IFA and Binary Code
Abstract: -
The Ifa divination system is a set of divination acts done by a professional that has been grantedauthority (a babalawo) to create and make use of set of rules to communicate with the gods so as to solvepeople’s problems. It is mostly carried out in the Yoruba community. Most people doubt the authenticity of this system and are not even aware of its similarities with ComputerScience. Further to this there are a few literature in this area of study. In this work effort was made to bringout salient similarities between the field of computer science and the act of ifa divination. An extensiveexplanation of the divination system was made, what it means and its origin and why people seek after it.We have presented an extensive explanation of the Ifa divination system, proved its existence andauthenticity, given and explained its similarities with Computer Science and presented a reference data forfuture work in this study.

The African Roots of Binary Code and Computers Explained by Ron Englash
Ron Englash explains the African roots of all and modern computing through African divination or oracle systems. This isn’t totally foreign to anyone having a little comprehension of geomancy, sacred geometry, the golden rule and African, Asian, European divination systems that preceded all secular activities.
We love this breakdown of what is natural to who he calls “Spirit People”. This just reinforces the idea that its no cliche, that Africa is the mother of civilization and if you don’t have an understanding of history you will believe anything presented to you by another. Truth is the solution. Imagine if this was taught in schools among other things. When public enemy was turned all the way up everybody was rocking African medallions, even white and asian folks.
We have met many who subscribe to the idea that slavery was a good thing or that traditional African cosmology spiritual systems like voodoo are taboo or “BAD” not realizing that their culture was taken from them waaay before they were born, told them that it was negative, used by the takers to progress economically and sold back to them in a different form.
Even today, Africans create movies about their traditional spiritual practices being negative. The programming is self generating just like binary numbers. These things are socially programmed through movies, advertising, and marketing, like “diamonds are a girls best friend” campaigns in the early 1900s. Today diamonds are often a prerequisite to choosing a life partner, and having kids with verses the character of the person. And character does include work ethnic because you have to have resources to support a family. So there’s someone who profits from marriages based on an idea or program that was inserted into the matrix around 100 years ago.

Russian Ships Near Data Cables Are Too Close for U.S. Comfort
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/10/26/world/europe/russian-presence-near-undersea-cables-concerns-us.html?referer=&_r=0
WASHINGTON — Russian submarines and spy ships are aggressively operating near the vital undersea cables that carry almost all global Internet communications, raising concerns among some American military and intelligence officials that the Russians might be planning to attack those lines in times of tension or conflict.
The issue goes beyond old worries during the Cold War that the Russians would tap into the cables — a task American intelligence agencies also mastered decades ago. The alarm today is deeper: The ultimate Russian hack on the United States could involve severing the fiber-optic cables at some of their hardest-to-access locations to halt the instant communications on which the West’s governments, economies and citizens have grown dependent.
While there is no evidence yet of any cable cutting, the concern is part of a growing wariness among senior American and allied military and intelligence officials over the accelerated activity by Russian armed forces around the globe. At the same time, the internal debate in Washington illustrates how the United States is increasingly viewing every Russian move through a lens of deep distrust, reminiscent of relations during the Cold War.
Inside the Pentagon and the nation’s spy agencies, the assessments of Russia’s growing naval activities are highly classified and not publicly discussed in detail. American officials are secretive about what they are doing both to monitor the activity and to find ways to recover quickly if cables are cut. But more than a dozen officials confirmed in broad terms that it had become the source of significant attention in the Pentagon.
“I’m worried every day about what the Russians may be doing,” said Rear Adm. Frederick J. Roegge, commander of the Navy’s submarine fleet in the Pacific, who would not answer questions about possible Russian plans for cutting the undersea cables.
Cmdr. William Marks, a Navy spokesman in Washington, said: “It would be a concern to hear any country was tampering with communication cables; however, due to the classified nature of submarine operations, we do not discuss specifics.”
In private, however, commanders and intelligence officials are far more direct. They report that from the North Sea to Northeast Asia and even in waters closer to American shores, they are monitoring significantly increased Russian activity along the known routes of the cables, which carry the lifeblood of global electronic communications and commerce.
Just last month, the Russian spy ship Yantar, equipped with two self-propelled deep-sea submersible craft, cruised slowly off the East Coast of the United States on its way to Cuba — where one major cable lands near the American naval station at Guantánamo Bay. It was monitored constantly by American spy satellites, ships and planes. Navy officials said the Yantar and the submersible vehicles it can drop off its decks have the capability to cut cables miles down in the sea.
“The level of activity,” a senior European diplomat said, “is comparable to what we saw in the Cold War.”
One NATO ally, Norway, is so concerned that it has asked its neighbors for aid in tracking Russian submarines.
Adm. James Stavridis, formerly NATO’s top military commander and now dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, said in an email last week that “this is yet another example of a highly assertive and aggressive regime seemingly reaching backwards for the tools of the Cold War, albeit with a high degree of technical improvement.”
The operations are consistent with Russia’s expanding military operations into places like Crimea, eastern Ukraine and Syria, where President Vladimir V. Putin has sought to demonstrate a much longer reach for Russian ground, air and naval forces.
“The risk here is that any country could cause damage to the system and do it in a way that is completely covert, without having a warship with a cable-cutting equipment right in the area,” said Michael Sechrist, a former project manager for a Harvard-M.I.T. research project funded in part by the Defense Department.
“Cables get cut all the time — by anchors that are dragged, by natural disasters,” said Mr. Sechrist, who published a study in 2012 of the vulnerabilities of the undersea cable network. But most of those cuts take place within a few miles from shore, and can be repaired in a matter of days.
What worries Pentagon planners most is that the Russians appear to be looking for vulnerabilities at much greater depths, where the cables are hard to monitor and breaks are hard to find and repair.
Mr. Sechrist noted that the locations of the cables are hardly secret. “Undersea cables tend to follow the similar path since they were laid in the 1860s,” he said, because the operators of the cables want to put them in familiar environments under longstanding agreements.
exceptions are special cables, with secret locations, that have been commissioned by the United States for military operations; they do not show up on widely available maps, and it is possible the Russians are hunting for those, officials said.

Anonymous Threatens to Take the Hoods Off of 1,000 KKK Members
In the newest chapter of their recurring online war with the Ku Klux Klan, the activist group Anonymous issued a considerable threat towards them on Twitter last week:
The conflict between the two organizations began in November of last year when the white supremacist group issued threats on its main Twitter account towards those protesting Michael Brown‘s death. In response to the vow of “lethal force,” Anonymous briefly took control of their account and announced that they would publish the names and social media account information of any Klansmen they uncovered as part of #OpKKK.
“We are not attacking you because of what you believe in as we fight for freedom of speech,” the hackers said in a recent statement. “We are attacking you because of what you do to our brothers and sisters.”
Members have reportedly been leaving the KKK for fear of exposure in past months. With the new information that has been discovered, the hackers released a new statement to reaffirm that they will continue to unmask and target supremacist websites:
The aim of the operation is nothing more than cyber Warfare. Anything you upload will be taken down, anything you use to promote the KKK will be shut down…You are more than a hate group. You operate much more like terrorists and you should be recognized as such. You are terrorists that hide your identities beneath sheets and infiltrate society on every level.

MyFreeCams Accidentally Publishes Model Account Totals And It's Eye Opening
Well this is quickly making the rounds. MFC had a technical glitch and accidentally published how many tokens the models have. The information was correlated to the MFC Model of the Month contest.
For conversion purposes, 1 token = 5 cents to the model.
Chick in first place collected over $88,000 in October and there's still another 5 days in the month.
$88K, WTF That's investment banker / law firm partner money. Some of these models are making professional athlete money.
I see quite a few names on the list who are always begging for help paying for school and whatnot, crying broke, (Cough: ReyCharlz #218) but they cleared more inpre-tax profit this month than a few legitimate small business owners I know.
DulceMoon/SweetKoofe looks to be the top black model at number 53. She's currently sitting on a cool $14,000USD but since she's in Colombia, that's 40.7 Million pesos. She's eating REAL good for that. No wonder her and Flora Bella have been upgrading where they live to suites and taking trips all the time.
Surprised to see 207, ZoeyJay that low - unless she hasn't worked much this month.

Police Say The 18-year-old Shot Himself, but Witnesses Disagree Near Ferguson
NORMANDY, MO (KTVI) - Police say a man shot himself after an incident near the intersection of Woodstock and Bermuda. Authorities say the officers encountered a suicidal person in Normandy, he fired shots at police and then ran. They say the suspect then shot himself.
According to Normandy Police Cpl. Tameika Sanders, officers responded at around 2 p.m. to the 5800 block of Bermuda for a report of a suicidal subject. The teen was being followed by family members who were seeking help from police and medical professionals.
Sanders said the 18-year-old was uncooperative when police and family members tried to talk to him. He continued walking to the 770 block of Ellington.
When police got out of their vehicles he took a gun from his waistband and began shooting at officers. Sanders said an officer used a taser on the teen. It was ineffective and officers returned fire. The suspect was not struck and fled through rear yards to the 7700 block of Paddington.
Officers momentarily lost track of the teen during the chase and then heard one additional gunshot, Sanders said. Police found the 18-year-old on the ground and unresponsive. Normandy police recovered a handgun lying next to the subject at the scene.
Officers immediately began applying first-aid. He was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.
Neighborhood resident Demetrius Young, who lives on Paddington, said he heard five shots and walked outside his front door, saw an officer dressed in blue chasing the man, heard two more shots, and then saw a young man laying on the ground.
The City of Ferguson tweets, "@stlcountypd are investigating a shooting involving a resident today. Despite rumors, Ferguson PD did not shoot a suspect."
There appear to be conflicting reports as to whether the young man was shot by police or himself.
St. Louis County Police has evidence technicians on the scene. Ferguson police are also assisting with the investigation.
