A New Jersey man told jurors in Delaware that a botched penile implant left him feeling like less of a man, WCAU-TV reported on Wednesday.
44-year-old Daniel Metzgar, who is suing the Delaware-based urologist who administered the procedure, Thomas Desperito, also said during testimony on Tuesday that he suffered an erection that lasted eight months.
According to the Delaware News Journal, the December 2009 procedure involved inserting a three-piece implant in the Newark resident’s groin, including a scrotum pump, inflatable cylinders inside the shaft of his penis, and a reservoir for fluid under his abdominal wall. But he testified on Monday that instead of boosting his confidence, the procedure and the resulting side-effects caused him to become withdrawn.
“I could hardly dance, with an erection poking my partner,” Metzgar told jurors. “It’s not something you want to bring out at parties and show to friends.”
On Monday, Desperito’s attorney, Colleen D. Shields, said to the jury that Metzgar ignored the increased swelling on his scrotum after the procedure, instead not saying anything until seeing Desperito in April 2010. Shields argued that Metzgar also ignored the urologist’s advice to remove the apparatus at that time. While Metzger said at the time that he did not have the $10,000 needed to do so, the newspaper reported that Shields told the jury that Desperito “wouldn’t have dealt with the money end of it.”
The implant had to be removed in August 2010 after it punctured Metzgar’s scrotum during a family vacation. He subsequently got another implant from another urologist, he told the jury, but has dealt with a decreased “level of sensation” and a 50 percent loss in length due to scar tissue.
