With the start of a new year, people always try to commit to new habits and are overwhelmed by the time needed to complete their new goal. In this thread you can set any amount of books you want to read for the year, as long as you’re reading. The mind is an amazing tool that needs exercise.

Support your local book shops, libraries, Amazon, Kindle, Kobo, Play Store and other places where you can buy books. We always carry phones around and are on them daily so a bit of reading here and there is only a positive use of time.

To fulfil the 52 Books in 52 weeks goal it’s best to aim for one book a week or more to give yourself room for periods where reading isn’t possible.

I accomplished 90 books last year reading 2-4 books a week. Keeping track I used a spreadsheet, but stopped updating around the 4 month mark. I’ll drop a spreadsheet in the second post along with other pieces of info.

Each month to keep this thread active I’ll hold a giveaway for a book of one’s choosing in paperback or official Epub formats.

If you need a starting point, The Old Man And The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a short and wonderfully crafted book. It contains the message of this thread and goal with grace.

San Diego Debuts Mouth Swabs To Help Detect Drivers With Pot In Their System

But authorities haven’t defined what level of drugs is over the line.

A major concern police have about state laws legalizing marijuana is how to detect when motorists may be driving under the influence of pot — or other drugs. Now, San Diego police are joining a growing number of cities relying on mouth swabs for chemical tests to help detect drivers who are on drugs.

The swabs and two portable testing machines hit the field Friday night in San Diego, reported CBS-8 TV. It’s the second city in the state after Los Angeles to use the new detection method.

The machines test for the presence of marijuana and six other drugs: cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamine, methadone, opiates and benzodiazepines. The amount of the drug or level of intoxication, however, is not determined in the tests.

Law enforcement officials believe the number of impaired drivers are bound to increase with California’s legalization of marijuana. A study by the state’s Office of Traffic Safety found that 38 percent of drivers killed in car crashes in California in 2014 tested positive for drugs, legal or illegal. That was up 6 percent from the previous year.

San Diego began using the Dräger 5000 test after officials met with authorities in Colorado, which legalized marijuana for recreational use in 2014, the San Diego Tribune reported.

Canadian authorities began using similar testing swabs and machines from a different company in a pilot program in late 2016 in the city of YellowKnife, the capital of the country’s Northwest Territories.

“The goal of any of these initiatives is to save people’s lives,” said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Corporal Todd Scaplen. “And if we have further tools to be able to do that, I think it’s very important.”

Swabs with portable testing kits are also being used in New York, Arizona and Nevada, among several other states, as well as in Germany and Belgium, and Australia, notes the Tribune. Other strategies, including breathalyzers that test for drugs and apps to help police test for impairment are also on the market.

Under San Diego guidelines, police will first observe a driver to make an initial determination about possible impairment, and may require a field sobriety test like those administered to suspected drunk drivers. If impairment is suspected, the motorist may then be asked to run a swab inside his or her mouth for as long as four minutes. The swab would then be tested in a portable machine and results would be available in up to eight minutes. For pot, the machine only tests for the presence of the active THC compound that causes a high. A driver can refuse the test, but then an officer can order a blood test.

As states grapple with drugs’ impact on road safety, testing strategies face several challenges. With pot, for example, a swab test might still detect the presence of the active THC compound even days after smoking, when the driver may be perfectly safe behind the wheel. On the other hand, a driver may be impaired by consuming marijuana through edible products that a saliva swab test might not detect.

The next problem states face is determining what level of drugs in a person’s system may result in dangerous driving, similar to the scale they’ve set for blood alcohol content. It’s unknown, however, if marijuana compound blood levels would be as predictive of impairment as blood alcohol levels tend to be.

Adulting - Alcohol = What, exactly???

OK. So, one thing Ive noticed is that for most of my adult life, every evening function I've been to, has had alcohol somewhere in the equation for it, if it's not work-related. However, as I've tried to get healthier over the past year or so, I've swore off booze from Mon-Thurs....which I've found really has curved the social night life.

Since there's no real bowling alley anywhere near me, and the museum can only go so far in providing entertainment, for all you non-drinkers out there, what are some suggestions for weeknight, non-ethanol induced fun?

Reports: Mueller Impanels Grand Jury In Federal Russia Probe

Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, recently impaneled a grand jury as part of the probe, several news outlets reported on Thursday.

The Wall Street Journal reported, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, that the Washington, D.C. grand jury “began its work in recent weeks” and is separate from the one assisting with the probe into President Donald Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. The impanelment of that jury predated Mueller’s appointment as special counsel.

Reuters confirmed, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, that Mueller convened a grand jury.

The empanelment of a new, separate grand jury reflects the scope of Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the election and whether any members of Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia.

Reuters also reported that grand jury subpoenas were issued in connection with a meeting between Donald Trump Jr., the President’s eldest son, and a Russian lawyer.

Trump Jr. attended the meeting after he was promised damaging information on Hillary Clinton as part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s campaign. It was not clear whether those subpoenas were issued by the grand jury Mueller impaneled.

“Senator Mitch McConnell said I had ‘excessive expectations,’ but I don’t think so,” Trump tweeted Wednesday afternoon. “After 7 years of hearing Repeal & Replace, why not done?”

McConnell said Monday Trump was creating a false impression that Senate Republicans are not effective because he’s a political novice. “Our new president, of course, has not been in this line of work before,” McConnell told a small group in Florence, Ky., this week. “And I think he had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process.”

In his remarks, McConnell also lamented that “artificial deadlines” — presumably from the White House — are giving the impression that Senate Republicans are underperforming after the Senate failed to repeal and replace Obamacare in its first six months. McConnell reminded the crowd it took Obama a year to pass the Affordable Care Act.

This is new: ABC announces first black Bachelorette

Rachel Lindsay has become the first African American lead to be cast on the romantic reality shows the Bachelorette or the Bachelor.

The announcement was made on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show on Monday evening, after days of rumors that the show’s producers were poised to cast an African American for the first time in more than 30 seasons.

While being interviewed on Good Morning America on Tuesday, Lindsay said: “I don’t feel added pressure. I’m honored to have this opportunity and to represent myself as an African American woman.”

ABC boss Channing Dungey, who became the first black woman to head a network TV channel, said that the show would cast an African American lead soon while speaking at the TCAs, saying that diversity had improved on the shows.

The two shows’ lack of diverse contestants has been criticized for years, and a lawsuit was brought against the production company and the show’s creator, Mike Fleiss, in 2012 by Nathaniel Claybrooks and Christopher Johnson, two African American men who had auditioned for the Bachelor.

The class-action suit claimed that the company and Fleiss had “knowingly, intentionally, and as a matter of corporate policy refused to cast people of color in the role of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette”, since the shows started in 2002.

The case was thrown out by a judge in October 2012, after she ruled the show’s casting was protected by the first amendment. In 2011, Fleiss put the lack of diversity down to the fact minority contestants rarely come forward to appear on the show. “We always want to cast for ethnic diversity. It’s just that for whatever reason, they don’t come forward. I wish they would.”

Last year Fusion reported that 59% of the black contestants who have been on the show exited within the first two weeks. After the lawsuit in 2013, the show cast its first non-white lead in the Bachelor with Venezuelan former footballer Juan Pablo Galavis – but the show’s creators were criticized for choosing a light-skinned south American.

In a statement Robert Mills, senior vice-president of alternative series, specials and late night for ABC, said of Lindsay: “She is an accomplished, confident and beautiful woman who knows what she wants in life. We all look forward to joining her on the joyous journey as she looks for that one special man.”

Lindsay, who is a lawyer, has already featured in the Bachelor, and will become the Bachelorette on 22 May when the show’s 13th season begins.

Walmart apologized Wednesday after photos surfaced on social media of a gun rack at one of its stores topped with a sign that read: “Own the school year like a hero.”

Images of the gun rack began appearing on Twitter early Wednesday morning. Walmart confirmed in responses to the images that the incident took place at store #1341, in Evansville, Indiana.

Walmart said the sign — the placement of which recalled numerous deadly school shootings — was taken down. “This sign had no business there and was taken down as soon as we were alerted,” the company tweeted.

Representatives of the Evansville location referred TPM to Walmart’s corporate communications line, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
